Liverpool are in free fall – and now it's the club's biggest star. After a 3-3 draw against Leeds, Mohamed Salah went straight to the throat of both coach Arne Slot and the club:
– I feel like the club is throwing me under the bus. I don't know why I'm suddenly sitting on the bench. I've done so much for this club.
The 33-year-old was benched for the third game in a row – and it seems to be boiling over.
"We can't work together anymore"
After the match, Salah suggested that his relationship with Slot is ruined for good. – I had a good relationship with the coach before. Now we have no relationship at all. I don't know why, the Egyptian told the press.
Jan Åge Fjørtoft interpreted it this way: – They have certainly concluded that they cannot work together anymore. It is over between Salah and Slot.
Arne Slot under pressure
Liverpool led 2-0 against Leeds but lost it all in extra time. It was the club's eighth winless game in the last ten in the Premier League.
"The team is imploding. You can't trust them," Gary Neville told Sky Sports.
The pressure on Arne Slot is increasing. Even though he is trying to make his mark on the team, the fans are starting to lose patience.
– Slot is putting his head on the block. This is a tough decision, said Pål André Helland in the Viaplay studio .
Helland: – God's blessing that Salah is leaving
Helland also made no secret of the fact that he believes Salah's absence could be a blessing:
– It is God's good fortune for Liverpool that Salah is going to the African Championship. Slot finally gets some peace of mind at work. The two can't be there at the same time anyway .
A heavy message?
Salah himself says he will enjoy every match as if it is his last before he leaves for Africa: “ The Brighton match could be my goodbye before I go to AFCON. I don’t know what will happen when I come back,” he said with a serious expression.
Liverpool are now in the midst of their biggest storm since Klopp's first season. When results, dressing room and stars start to unravel – then you know Merseyside is on fire.
