Michael Carrick (44) has been appointed as interim manager of Manchester United, according to the renowned sports website The Athletic. The club has not yet made an official confirmation, but all indications are that Carrick will lead the team until the end of the season.
Carrick is one of United's most decorated players in modern times. Between 2006 and 2018, he made 464 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and three League Cups. Sir Alex Ferguson called him "the best central midfielder in English football" in 2014.
"United's future manager"
The former midfield general was captain in his final season and ended his career at the club. He later served as assistant under Ole Gunnar Solskjær from 2019 to 2021.
In an interview with The Athletic in 2023, Solskjær said: – I am one hundred percent sure he will be the manager of Manchester United if he wants to.
Solskjaer disappointed
According to renowned journalist Andy Mitten, who is close to Solskjær, the Norwegian is said to be disappointed that he did not get the role himself this time.
United has thus chosen continuity and club DNA during a turbulent period – with Carrick building a bridge until a permanent solution is in place.
