Carrick in the driving seat as United's new manager

According to The Athletic, Michael Carrick has moved up to pole position to take over as Manchester United's interim manager for the remainder of the season. The 44-year-old has held meetings with the club's management - as has Ole Gunnar Solskjær - but now the arrows are clearly pointing in Carrick's direction.

The club stressed that no final decision has been made, but an announcement is expected within 48 hours. The process is being led by sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, with final approval from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family.

Darren Fletcher, who has been in caretaker charge following Ruben Amorim's departure, could become part of Carrick's support team. Additional coaching resources are also being considered.

Amorim was sacked after a breakdown in his relationship with the management – compounded by his public statements that he wanted to be a “manager” rather than a “coach”. United are now looking to stabilise the situation before the search for a permanent solution begins.

Carrick had a brief spell as interim manager in 2021 following Solskjaer's exit, and is a familiar figure at Old Trafford after 12 years at the club. Now he could be facing a new chapter - this time as the man to calm the storm.
