Analysis Information
Major League Soccer continues, and this weekend we get an exciting matchup in Canada when Toronto FC takes on Chicago Fire. The home team is still winless and has a lot to prove in front of their own fans, while the visitors from Chicago have started to find their form. Both teams have offensive qualities, but also defensive weaknesses – which could make for an entertaining affair.
Toronto FC: Pressure mounts after weak start
Toronto FC have had a tough start to the season and are still winless after three games. Robin Fraser and his team have struggled to find their rhythm, especially defensively, where they have been anything but solid. With five goals conceded in three games, Toronto have shown that they are vulnerable at the back, and even at home at BMO Field they have not been particularly impressive.
Federico Bernardeschi is the clear frontrunner for the team, and the Italian is undoubtedly the player Toronto look to when they need a moment of magic. With his Serie A experience and a precise left foot, he can create chances out of thin air. However, he has not been able to pull the team out of the quagmire on his own so far.
Then of course we have to talk about Ola Brynhildsen. The Norwegian, who many know from his time in the Eliteserien, has still not opened his goal account in MLS. He came to Toronto with high expectations, but has not yet fully settled into his new club. Maybe this is the game where he can finally get his breakthrough?
Toronto will have to show more in this match if they are to turn their season around. They have enough quality in the team to cause problems for Chicago Fire, but they will have to avoid the defensive mistakes that have characterized them so far.
Chicago Fire: Found the spark
Chicago Fire opened the season with a brutal loss to Columbus Crew, but have slowly but surely worked their way back up. They have been playing in form with a strong draw against DC United and an impressive away win against FC Dallas, which has given the team confidence going into this match.
The big player to watch for Chicago is Hugo Cuypers. The Belgian has already shown why he was brought in, and his ability to be in the right place at the right time could be crucial here. He scored the winning goal in the previous match and seems to have settled in well in MLS. Brian Gutiérrez has also proven to be a key creative force in midfield, and he could play a crucial role in creating chances against a Toronto team that is leaking at the back.
Chicago still has its challenges defensively, but they have proven to be better equipped than Toronto so far this season. If they can handle Toronto's expected pressure early in the game, they can exploit the spaces the hosts leave behind and punish them on the counterattack.
What can we expect?
Both teams have a lot to play for, but Toronto has the most pressure on them. After a slow start, they desperately need a win to get their season back on track. At the same time, Chicago knows they can go to BMO Field and cause trouble for the hosts.
Toronto are offensive at home, but it has often cost them backfield. Chicago has shown they can be effective away from home and will probably get chances here. Everything is set for an open game with chances at both ends – exactly what we like when looking for goal games.
