Analysis Information
Welcome to another night of MLS magic – where madness and sparkling attack are never far apart. This time we head to Snapdragon Stadium, where upstart San Diego FC takes on Toronto FC. Two teams with very different histories, but one thing in common: they rarely keep a clean sheet.
Toronto has the tradition and experience, but it's San Diego that brings a breath of fresh air and a will to attack. These are two teams that both like to play ball and both have a habit of forgetting to lock the back door. Here, all you have to do is find some coffee and popcorn, because this smells like goals both ways.
San Diego FC: A newcomer with a dazzling attack – and a leaky backcourt
San Diego has been a fresh addition to this year's MLS. They have entered the league with energy, enthusiasm and attacking football, and although there is a natural learning curve to take into account, they have already managed to distinguish themselves as a team that dares to attack.
The team's attacking football is simply entertaining. They have scored in 9 of their last 10 games and are particularly dangerous at home, where they pump in crosses, combine well in the gaps and finish frequently. Several of the players have grown quickly with the role, and you get the feeling that something exciting is being built in San Diego.
The problem? They also concede goals, often. In fact, they have only kept a clean sheet in their last ten games. For a team that is still establishing structures at the back, that is natural, but it also gives us value when we are chasing goal plays.
Toronto FC: Dangerous to score - at both ends
Toronto has bounced back from a rocky start to the season and is finally starting to find the back of the net on a regular basis. They have scored in five straight games and are showing signs that their offense is finally settling in. Jonathan Osorio, Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne are starting to find their groove – and that could spell trouble for any defense.
They are not among the league's most explosive teams, but they are creating more and more - and the offensive pressure is higher than earlier in the season. When it comes to the defensive side, there is still a lot of work to be done. Toronto has conceded two goals or more in six of its last eight games, and especially on the road they rarely keep it close.
What can we expect?
I expect a game that is lively from start to finish. San Diego will be in control at home and will attack with high intensity. Toronto, on the other hand, will rely on counterattacks, crosses and individual qualities, which they have actually delivered on recently. Both teams have scored in 8 of the last 10 games San Diego has played. Toronto has only gone goalless once in their last seven. And with two defenses that leak, but attacks that deliver, this should be an open and entertaining affair. It could easily be a game with 3-4 goals and chances in both directions and we like that.
