Analysis of:
San Diego FC – LA Galaxy 05/24/25

Written by: Arve
Analysis Information
San Diego FC has gone from unproven newcomer to crowd favorite in record time. The team is simply fun to watch, and it has also yielded results. Now a match awaits against old greats LA Galaxy, and they are two teams with completely different directions. San Diego is riding the wave of success. The Galaxy look like they have gotten lost in their own star system.
San Diego FC: Newcomer with punch and plan
After 14 games, San Diego is 7-3-4, and sits atop the Western Conference. At home at Snapdragon Stadium, they have swept opponents off the field, including 5-0 against Dallas and 3-1 against Vancouver. The team scores, presses, and plays with a confidence that is not reminiscent of a rookie.
Danish Anders Dreyer has been a revelation in MLS, while Chucky Lozano gives the team an extra dimension in the final third. And the goals have come steadily – they have scored in all home games and over 1.5 goals in four of the last five. The form is solid, and with LA Galaxy visiting, there is room for more cheer.
LA Galaxy: Historically bad, but corner machine
The Galaxy are still winless after 14 rounds. 0-4-10 and a whopping 33 points behind – those are numbers that should trigger an emergency meeting, not a contract extension. Yet that's exactly what happened: coach Greg Vanney recently got a new contract until 2028. Understand that, whoever can.
But even if the goals are lacking, the Galaxy actually have one thing they are frighteningly good at: corners. In their last three away games, they have produced a whopping 27 corners – an average of 9 per game. Joseph Paintsil in particular has been central here, with his ability to challenge and win set pieces. This makes them an exciting card in the corner market, even if most other things fail.
It's worth noting that this is not a team that parks the bus. They do try, but are often punished harshly at the other end.
Conclusion: Space must wait, San Diego cannot
We get a meeting between a strong and in-form San Diego FC at home – and a Galaxy team that neither scores goals nor keeps a close lead. But they get corners, and that's just enough for us to see value in both games. The main game still goes to a team with a tailwind, against one that is floundering in a headwind without a compass.
