Analysis Information
It's time for Champions League qualification at Ibrox and it doesn't exactly smell of 0-0 and a nervous battle for position. Here, two teams that are neither known for parking the bus nor keeping a clean sheet very often meet. With a Rangers team in transition and a Panathinaikos team that comes with everything to win, the stage is set for an evening of goals, pressure and potential Greek drama.
For both teams, this match means everything. It's about prestige, pride and not least tens of millions in potential CL participation. But it's also about identity: two teams that want to dominate, not control. It gives us a match picture we're happy to bet on.
Rangers: Full throttle forward – and still leaks backwards
Rangers have had a busy summer with new signings, a new manager and a new energy. Russell Martin has made his mark on the team immediately and that mark appears to be a clear desire to attack. There have been goals at both ends in most of the pre-season games and although the results have been mixed, the games have rarely been dull.
Among the new names we find Gassama, Aarons and Rothwell, all offensive forces that can give Panathinaikos big problems. But Rangers are still vulnerable at the back. The defensive foundation is not yet in place, and in the friendly matches against Club Brugge and Hibs, among others, we saw several times that the team struggled to defend against quick transitions. In addition, Thelo Aasgaard is uncertain and with several unconfirmed constellations at the back, there is little indication of security in their own field.
Panathinaikos: Without fear – and without a left-back
The Greek giants come to Glasgow with one goal in mind: to score an away goal or two and stay alive in the double-header. They have made some good reinforcements this summer, including Lafont in goal and Touba in central defence, but the big minus is the absence of Giorgos Kyriakopoulos at left-back. This opens up opportunities for Rangers, especially with the pace they have on the wings.
Offensively, there is still a lot to like about this team. Panathinaikos have scored in eight of their last ten games and play with a clear goal of involving the wings and getting crosses and shots. At the same time, they are rarely completely reliable at the back, especially when they face teams that dare to press high and create imbalance. Just like Rangers.
What can we expect?
I don't expect a chess match. This will be a game of will, nerves and high intensity. Rangers will set the standard at home at Ibrox and that means chances, crosses and pressure from the first kick. Panathinaikos will try to be smart and exploit the transitions, and they have the pace and experience to succeed.
With two teams that are far better in attack than in defence and with great sporting and financial motivation to win, this looks like an ideal match for goal-scoring. It doesn't have to explode early, but it is set to be an open and goal-rich match as space opens up
