It's not every week that a regular MLS game carries a little extra emotional baggage, but that's exactly the case when the Portland Timbers host the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Sunday night. Just two weeks ago, San Jose knocked out the Timbers in the US Open Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory. It hurt – for both the fans and the team – and there's little doubt that Portland is now looking to respond.

That being said: This doesn't just smell like a revenge match. It also smells like a match with a high tempo, lots of back and forth, and not least: plenty of corners. That's exactly how we like it.

Portland Timbers: Moving forward in fits and starts, but guaranteed corners at home

Under Phil Neville, Portland has slowly but surely gotten used to the defensive side, while their home game has improved. They have been inconsistent all season, but at home at Providence Park they have been much fresher than on the road. The last five in MLS give one win, two draws and two losses. But what is worth noting here is how the match patterns develop in Portland's home games: they get a lot of crosses, look for set pieces, and have a team that produces corners in buckets and buckets when they have the initiative. Last time at home (against Colorado) they won 2–1 after 7–2 in corner statistics. They also produced well with corner kicks in the loss to Orlando. With the loss to San Jose in the back of their minds, there is reason to believe that the Timbers will go out aggressively and chase from the start.

San Jose Earthquakes: Offensive strength, defensive openings – perfect for corner parties

Bruce Arena has got San Jose on a track that works well offensively – two wins and two draws in the last five are evidence of a team with self-confidence. But away, the Earthquakes have a far more generous profile: they concede a lot, but also create a lot going forward. And this is exactly the dynamite we like when we are looking for overplay on corners. Their last matches have regularly passed both 9 and 10 corners in total, and they have produced solid corner numbers themselves, even on foreign turf. For a team that likes to move a lot of people up and loves to hit crosses from the wings, it is no surprise. In addition, it is worth noting that they have failed on their last two visits to Portland – so it is reasonable to expect them to come here with a clear plan to attack, not lie behind. That will in turn drive up corner production on both sides.

What can we expect?

I expect a game where Portland will be determined to dominate the first half and chase scoring early. At the same time, we know that San Jose is the team that never gives up and has the pace and punch to come back no matter the game.

With two teams that like to attack wide and produce well from set pieces, we have a match that cries out for over-betting on corners. The fact that both teams have also shown scoring form recently also gives extra value to a more comprehensive betbuilder bet.
