Analysis Information
Bodø/Glimt has made Aspmyra a daunting place for European teams to visit, and Olympiacos experienced that last week. With a crushing 3-0 win in the first leg, the Norwegians have a foot firmly planted in the next round. But the job is not done. The return leg will be played at Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, where the Greeks rarely lose, and where the home crowd will do everything to carry the team back into the game.
Glimt has in recent years developed into Norway's flagship in European football. Roma, Celtic, AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb – the list of teams that have been crushed by Kjetil Knutsen's men is starting to get long. And the impressive thing? They often do this even without being in season!
But can they finish the job in Greece? Olympiacos are not going to give up without a fight.
Olympiacos: A Greek team with a knife at its throat
Olympiacos has a long experience from European tournaments and is used to fighting against big teams. But even the most hardened supporters were shocked by what happened in Bodø. 3-0 was not just an unexpected result – it was a show of strength from a Norwegian team toying with a club with much greater financial resources.
Now it's all about revenge. At home in Greece, Olympiacos is a completely different team. They have enormous pressure from the stands, and there is no doubt that they will go straight for Glimt's throat from the kick-off. We are talking early crosses, high pressure and a desperate chase for goals. Roman Yaremchuk did not achieve much at Aspmyra, but on home soil he can be a threat. With Chiquinho and Giorgos Masouras in the back room and a midfield that will be far more aggressive, this could be a completely different match than we saw in Bodø.
Defensively, Olympiacos showed great weaknesses in the first match. They struggled to handle Glimt's quick combinations, and goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had a busy evening. If they are to turn this around, they will have to be much more compact and prevent Glimt from getting counterattacking space. But that is easier said than done.
Bodø/Glimt: The Norwegian European adventure continues
What more can you say about Bodø/Glimt in Europe? They have gone from being a curiosity to becoming a team that no one wants to face. Kjetil Knutsen's team has an identity, a clear playing style and an ability to create chances regardless of the opponent. And it has been proven time and time again that they are not intimidated by big stadiums or powerful names.
3-0 at home to Aspmyra was a perfect result, but Glimt knows they can't sit back and hope it works. They have to continue playing their offensive game, creating imbalances and exploiting the spaces that arise when Olympiacos has to push forward.
Players like Kasper Høgh, Patrick Berg and Jens Petter Hauge were outstanding in the first match, and they will be crucial again. The midfield with Hugo Vetlesen and Ulrik Saltnes gives the team balance, while the wings will be important in the counterattack phase.
An important factor here is that Bodø/Glimt almost never leave the field without scoring in Europe, even away from home. They have found the back of the net against far stronger teams than Olympiacos in the past, and it is hard to imagine that they will not get their chances here as well.
Conclusion: Glimt should do the job
This is a game where Olympiacos will have to score more goals, and they will attack from the start. But it also opens up huge spaces at the back, something Bodø/Glimt are experts at exploiting. The Greeks could get off to a good start, but it would be a big surprise if Glimt doesn't also get on the scoresheet.
We envision a match where Olympiacos will create enough chances to score a goal or two, but where Glimt will be able to punish them in transition. This is shaping up to be an entertaining affair, and we believe both teams will find their way to the net.
