Analysis Information
So here we are again, the final round of MLS.
The league we have loved, hated and not quite understood, but still followed with our hearts pounding week after week. Now there is only one more round of the series left before the playoffs take over the show and some teams actually play for their season on Sunday night.
Among them is the Chicago Fire, who travel to Gillette Stadium to face a New England Revolution team with nothing to play for. For Chicago, it's a matter of life or death in the wild card, while New England mostly just wants a vacation. There's a long way to go between motivation and maybe even points for the away team.
New England Revolution – on the cusp of a tough season
Just like in 2024, New England will have to watch the playoffs from the couch. They will finish in 11th place in the Eastern Conference regardless of the result, and now they are playing only for glory.
Last weekend they were brutally reminded of the difference between teams with and without spark, a 4-1 loss to Inter Miami, where they didn't have a single shot on goal in the first half. Israeli youngster Dor Turgeman added to the score, but he has been called up to the national team and is unlikely to do more than make a substitution.
In addition, Ilay Feingold, Ceballos and Ganago are missing, and with a thin squad it is difficult to imagine them reversing the trend now. It smells like another evening of honorable effort, but little payoff.
Chicago Fire – pressured, but in flux
For Chicago, it's a completely different story. They have a playoff spot within reach, but it could go either way. With a win, they could actually finish as high as 6th place, but a loss could send them down to 9th place – and into a nerve-wracking wild card match. Motivation is therefore at its peak, and the form is not bad at all. They beat Inter Miami 5–3 last weekend, and offensively they have got things going. Hugo Cuypers and Maren Haile-Selassie have delivered consistently, and the team has scored in nine of the last ten games.
Although they haven't always been rock solid at the back, they have a clear plan and in this match we will likely see a Chicago team that controls the tempo, exploits the counterattack space and takes control of the match from the start.
Conclusion
Motivation, form and quality point in the same direction: Chicago Fire. New England has little to play for, several key players out and a crowd that probably already has their minds set on next season. Chicago, on the other hand, is fighting for a safe playoff spot and will attack with everything they have.
I think they take at least one point here and a good chance for all three.
