Analysis Information
Saturday night will be a high-stakes, low-stakes game for defenses as Nashville SC hosts Real Salt Lake at Geodis Park. Both teams have been on the move with varying degrees of success so far this season, but one thing seems pretty clear: Once they get going, there will be chances – and goals. With two teams that thrive on the ball going forward and often forget that there is a defensive side to the game, this could be a fast-paced affair with entertainment from the get-go.
Nashville SC: In search of balance and a new home party
Nashville started the season with a bang and has already shown what they have offensively. The home game against Philadelphia (3-1) and the 2-0 win against Portland show that they can be toxic when everything goes well. But the last two games have been frustrating. First a 1-2 loss to Cincinnati, and then the same numbers were lost to Charlotte – where they were leading until five minutes remained. The loss of points is probably still in the body.
BJ Callaghan's men have shown enough, however, that optimism is still alive in Tennessee. With offensive contributors like Hany Mukhtar, who remains among the most creative players in the league, and the ever-dangerous Sam Surridge, Nashville should not be underestimated. They have scored in six of seven games – and at home they have been solid for several seasons now. But the defensive structure is not as unshakable as before. They have conceded goals in five of their seven matches so far.
Real Salt Lake: On the way for a solid boost?
Things were looking a little bleak after four losses in their first six games, but then came a much-awaited turnaround in a 2-0 home win over LA Galaxy. With two goals early in the first half, it seemed as if Real Salt Lake finally got their money's worth. They now travel to Nashville with newfound confidence and hope that things will turn around for the better.
Zac MacMath has been consistent between the posts, but it's the offensive side that looks most exciting. Diego Luna is starting to find his rhythm, and Andrés Gómez has really picked things up on the wing. They've already scored nine goals in their first seven games – more than Columbus, DC United and New England. At the same time, it's leaking at the back: 13 goals in seven games means they often have to score at least two to get anything going.
On the away field they have been both unstable and vulnerable, but in these types of matches – with room for counterattacks and open play – they can quickly help to increase the tempo.
Conclusion: Entertainment in front of goal – but unlikely to keep a clean sheet
There are many indications that this will be a game with good pace and offensive initiative. Nashville needs an upturn, and at home at Geodis Park they tend to be strong – but Real Salt Lake is on the rise after a weak start and comes with renewed confidence. The combination of two teams creating chances and two defenses that are not always as tight should mean one thing: goals.
We believe in a match where there is a bang at both ends – maybe not a classic, but a goal-packed affair with high entertainment value. Perfect for those of you who like to wake up to the highlights on Sunday morning!
