Analysis Information
The Champions League heads to the French Riviera, where Stade Louis II will be the setting for glamour to meet football machinery. Monaco are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2018/19 after a strong season in Ligue 1. Now the ultimate test awaits: Manchester City – a team that started the season a bit rusty after major changes, but who now seem to have found their rhythm and are chasing full control of the group.
Monaco – Adi Hütter's project hits the wall
Monaco is led by Austrian Adi Hütter, a coach with a background in the Red Bull system, Swiss league gold and Bundesliga success. Since taking over in 2023, he has lifted the team to silver in Ligue 1 and back into the Champions League.
But the start in Europe was brutal: away to Club Brugge, the defense unraveled before half-time and ended in a heavy 1–4 loss. It showed how vulnerable they can be at the back. Absences in midfield and defense have not improved the situation. Denis Zakaria and Lamine Camara are out, Aleksandr Golovin is struggling with injury, and Aladji Bamba is still unavailable.
There are bright spots in attack. Ansu Fati, on loan from Barcelona, has made a great start, scoring on his Champions League debut and two goals against Metz. Maghnes Akliouche has been a breath of fresh air in midfield, and in the summer the club brought in experienced Eric Dier to the defence. But the whole backline still looks porous, and against a team like City it can be mercilessly punished.
Manchester City – rusty start, but now the machinery is grinding again
City started this season more fumblingly than we are used to. This was not least due to major changes in the squad after the summer – several key players disappeared, and Pep Guardiola had to put together a new team hierarchy. The first few weeks were characterized by the fact that automaticity was not completely established, and the performances were more uneven than we usually see.
But now it's starting to look like the old City machine again. Burnley were swept off the field 5-1 at the weekend, and Erling Haaland scored two more goals. In the Champions League opener, they took three points without much trouble, and it looks like Pep has got the pieces under control and established a new, functioning team.
Yes, there are still some minor concerns – Rodri is unsure with a knee injury, and the width in defence and midfield is somewhat reduced. But the core of Haaland, Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva and Foden is intact, and the quality in attack is enormous. Once City get the game into their rhythm, they are almost impossible to stop.
Conclusion
Monaco are an exciting offensive project under Adi Hütter, and players like Ansu Fati can create moments. But the defense looks too fragile to stand up to a City team that has now found form after a somewhat shaky start. Pep Guardiola has got the machinery running again, and this looks like a night where the visitors both win and score at least two.
