MLS Playoffs – Game 3 (best of 3)

Now we're in the real playoff zone. No safety net, no time for regrets - this is all about survival. Minnesota took Game 1 on penalties. Seattle responded in Game 2 with full throttle and a 4-2 win. Now it's 1-1, and everything will be decided at Allianz Field.

Here, one goal doesn't mean anything. Here, you have to move on. And you don't do that by playing defensive tactics and parking the bus. You do that with risk, pace and attack.

Minnesota United – big spaces, big potential

Minnesota at home is never boring. They go straight for the throat, especially when the crowd is behind them. In game 2 we saw exactly how they create danger: high tempo on the wings, early crosses and constant threat in the back. They ended up with two goals, and could have easily had more.

The problem is the same as always: when Minnesota goes all out, they become vulnerable at the back. Seattle got way too much space between the lines last time out, and such an efficient opponent doesn't need many chances before it hits. But Minnesota has no choice – they have to go forward again. The crowd expects it. The format of the game forces it. And when Minnesota attacks, the game becomes open. Oh, pretty.

Seattle Sounders – experience, pace and precision

Seattle did exactly what good playoff teams do in Game 2: turned up the tempo, took over the midfield and took chances. Obed Vargas was huge, and when Seattle sets up their space game, they flow through like water. They have the routine, they have the composure and they know exactly how to handle these games.

But they are not flawless. Seattle is missing chances in every away game, and Minnesota at home is not going to let them have 90 quiet minutes. The Sounders are going to get their chances in transition – but they are also going to have to defend deep at times. And that means shots, rebounding space, and potential chaos at both ends.

Conclusion

This is not a game that ends 0–0 and “wait and see”. Neither of them can bet on the result. Minnesota has to move forward to survive. Seattle is best when the game opens up. Both teams score, both teams create a lot of space, and both have the qualities to hit the net.

We scored 6 goals in game 2. And all football signs point in the same direction again: chances, chances and chances.

We end up somewhere: this smells like a goal.
