Analysis Information
It's set for a slightly different NFL experience this weekend, when the Dolphins and Commanders meet in Madrid. Two teams that don't really have much to play for in the playoffs, but both have shown one thing throughout the season: their games are rarely boring and rarely low-scoring.
In other words, this is a match that is right in the middle of a goal game.
Miami Dolphins – An attack that could explode at any moment
Miami has delivered some solid wins in recent weeks, and once their offense gets going, it takes off. Tua Tagovailoa has plenty of weapons around him, and even without a full injury-free squad, the Dolphins have shown they can move the ball effectively and put points on the board.
But what's really interesting for us as players is their defense:
In seven of their eight even games this year, the Dolphins have allowed 27 points or more.
That's a lot.
They simply miss out on a number of big games, and that opens the door for Washington to actually contribute well on the scoring front, even though they are not exactly a top team this season.
Washington Commanders – Chaotic season, but the offense is not toothless
Washington is coming off three brutal games against the Chiefs, Seahawks and Lions – three of the league’s most demanding opponents defensively. That’s reflected in their numbers, but here they face a Miami defense that has struggled much more.
Even with injuries at quarterback, the Commanders have shown they can move the ball when their opponents open the door a little. And the Dolphins have opened it often:
- Washington has allowed 24+ points in eight of its last nine
- They have given up over 400 yards in four straight games
- This often leads to “shooting duels”, where both teams have to respond to each other’s scores
So Washington has weaknesses at the back – but they are aggressive enough going forward that they can make up for some of what they give up.
The match picture – everything is in place for points
When we put all this together, the trends become clear:
- Both teams have leaky defenses
- Both teams are playing with little to lose and could be more offensive in their game plan
- Miami scores a lot – but they also concede a lot
- Washington is finally coming out of a tough stretch and facing a defense they can actually move the ball against
Conclusion
Both teams come into this with a clear pattern: high-paced, high-scoring games. Washington should get better working conditions than they've had in a long time, and the Dolphins' offense is more than capable of putting up 25-30 points on its own.
When both defenses have had major problems over time, it's hard to see this becoming a game where the teams stand still and kick the ball to each other.
Everything points to an entertaining match and a match with points.
