Two cities, two proud clubs and one bridge that unites more than it divides, but on Wednesday night there is no fraternization to be found when Malmö and Copenhagen clash in the Champions League qualifiers. Because while the Øresund sloshes quietly between the countries, things are sure to boil over at Eleda Stadion. This may not be El Clásico, but by Scandinavian standards it is not far off. And when both teams are hungry for European Cup games, you just have to fasten your seatbelts.

Malmö FF – Fast at home, fast forward

Malmö enter this match as the most in-form team in Allsvenskan. Although they are currently in 3rd place, they have won six straight matches in all competitions and three points in each of their last four league matches. Most recently, a strong 3–2 away win against Brommapojkarna, where they showed both character and efficiency. At home at Eleda Stadion they have been rock solid: 7-1-1, with a goal difference of 20-5. It doesn't just smell of herring in Malmö harbour at the moment, it smells of success.

They are a team that is used to having the ball, creating chances and pressing from the start. With attacking wingers, full-backs who love to cross, and a physique that can withstand European opposition, they are built to create corners and they do just that: 6.50 corners on average per home game and the fewest corners conceded in Allsvenskan.

FC Copenhagen – Good start, but are they falling behind?

FCK has had a great start to the Danish season with two wins in two games, but behind the numbers there is a bit of debris in the machinery. They are conceding a lot: a whopping 6.33 corners on average – and that against teams that are not necessarily playing in the top tier of Europe.

We know what we get from this Copenhagen team: solid routine, good pace and dangerous set pieces. But there is also a certain instability, especially when they face teams that dare to press them high. And we can safely say that Malmö does that. Especially at home, where the atmosphere is usually as intense as a Skåne pub at 11:00 PM on matchday.

What can we expect?

Here we expect a match where Malmö will try to take control immediately. They are in season, have confidence and home ground. Copenhagen can be pressed backwards, and then the crosses, set pieces and corners we like will come. FCK will probably hold off at times and will hardly go all-in before the return match.

The match picture points to a high tempo, lots of transitions and a good number of crosses – and then we know what will follow: corners.

Bet suggestions

CL Qualifiers at 19:00: Malmö – FC Copenhagen: Over 8.5 corners in total (1.98)

Both teams are creating, and FCK is allowing. This smells like a corner bonanza.

Alternative game:

CL Qualifiers at 19:00: Malmö – FCK: Malmö over 4.5 corners (2.07)

With the match picture we envision and Malmö's strong corner statistics at home, this seems both safe and tempting.
