More MLS playoff drama is in store, and this time the spotlight is on Los Angeles.
At BMO Stadium, LAFC is set to host Austin FC in what could be one of the most entertaining first-round matches on paper.
A best-of-three format means every second counts – and the pressure is on the home team, who are expected to do the job in front of their own fans.

LAFC has been one of the league's most entertaining teams all season, and now there's no room for error. After a couple of games without their biggest stars, both Heung-min Son and Denis Bouanga are back. That alone gives us confidence that this could be a night where things really hit the offensive line.

Los Angeles FC – with the stars back and pressure in the tent

Two weeks ago, these teams met, and Austin won 1-0. However, it was a game without both Bouanga and Son – two players who have produced over 30 goals this season alone. It was also clear that LAFC lacked their end product.

When LAFC gets their offensive profiles back, the team immediately looks like a completely different animal. They finished the season with four wins in six games, and at home at BMO Stadium they have been rock solid all season: 11 wins, 2 draws and only 4 losses. With a crowd that always lifts the team an extra notch, everything is in place for Los Angeles to get revenge for the loss in Austin.

Bouanga has been one of MLS' most prolific scorers, while Son has already made a solid impression since his move. With that duo at the top, it's hard to imagine LAFC going goalless.

Austin FC – defensive security, but thinner going forward

Austin did his job in the league, but it was by a hair. The team has struggled with consistency and has had to rely heavily on goalkeeper Brad Stuver, who has made the most saves in MLS this season. Without Brandon Vázquez and Diego Rubio, they are far weaker offensively.

They have shown they can frustrate top teams, but it comes at a cost – and LAFC at home is a very different challenge than an injury-plagued team in the Texas heat.
Austin likes to lie low and wait for counterattacks, but against pressure like LAFC’s, it will be a question of how long they can hold out.

Conclusion

Playoffs mean nervousness, but also full offensive power when it really counts.
LAFC has regained its key players just in time, and with Son and Bouanga on the field, they have regained the pace and creativity that have been missing.
Austin is a solid collective defensively, but they lack forward shooting and will have more than enough to do to hold their own.

Everything indicates that Los Angeles will get its revenge – and that there will be goals at both ends of the field.
