Analysis Information
The NFL weekend offers an interesting matchup between the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are coming off a surprise win over the Packers, but for me this game is all about a Lions team that is looking more and more like itself. After struggling in the opening week, the offense has really come alive, and with an offensive line that looked rock solid in the road win over the Ravens, I see a good chance that Detroit can dominate this matchup.
Detroit Lions – The Lions Roar Again
The Lions were simply impressive in Baltimore. The offensive line allowed 0 sacks against one of the league's most dangerous pass rushers, and they rushed for a whopping 224 yards. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery led the way, while Jared Goff got the time he needed to set up play-action. Defensively, it was perhaps most encouraging to see Aidan Hutchinson back at his best – 1 sack, 9 pressures and a forced fumble.
The Lions have shown they can control the game with a balance of running and passing. When they're playing at this level, it's hard to imagine the Browns being able to keep up offensively.
Cleveland Browns – Without spark plugs
The Browns surprised many by beating the Packers last time out, but I have little faith that they can replicate anything similar here. The offense is simply too limited. Even against a Bengals defense that has looked shabby, they struggled to produce. The injury problems on the offensive line don't make things any easier, with Dawand Jones out for the season, Jack Conklin still questionable, and Martin Emerson on injured reserve.
The defense is still the team's great strength. They can cause trouble for the Lions at the start, but if the Browns are to keep up here, they will have to deliver far more than we have seen so far. I think it will be difficult away against a Lions team that is running with full confidence.
Conclusion
I was impressed with the Lions last week. Not just because they won, but because they did it against a Ravens team that was a clear favorite at home. Now they face a Browns team that simply doesn't have the offense to match. The Ravens were -11.5 at home against the Browns and from what we've seen of the Lions the last two weeks, the line here should have been in double digits.
