Analysis of:
DC United - Nashville SC 6/29/25

Analysis Information
Audi Field is ready for Saturday night's Eastern Conference game, but home fans might want to adjust their expectations. DC United is in trouble, and now comes a Nashville team that has started to pick up both its pace and goal production. Two teams in completely different mental states are meeting – and it smells like away goals.
DC United: Defensively vulnerable and offensively ineffective
DC United now have one win in their last six games, and that was followed by a clear upset last time out – a 0-2 away loss to Real Salt Lake. They struggled to create chances, had just one shot on goal and were simply outplayed. It was confirmation that the problems are not solved.
Offensively, Christian Benteke is sorely missed. Without him, they lack both physicality in the box and a clear goal-scoring point. They have now gone goalless in three of their last five, and defensively they are leaking steadily. At home, they have only won two of eight games, and in several of those games they have fallen behind early.
In short, it is a team that seems to lack direction – and even on their own turf, they do not seem to have the tools to take control.
Nashville SC: Hat-trick, energy and new ambitions
It wasn't long ago that we wondered if Nashville had stalled. But then it hit the New England Revolution – literally. Sam Surridge scored a hat-trick and Nashville won 3-2. It was an offensive display and a sign that they are not done messing around at the top.
They now have eight goals in their last three games and look far more dangerous in the box than they did earlier in the season. Hany Mukhtar controls the midfield with composure and creativity, and with Surridge also finding the back of the net, they have suddenly regained a balance they have been missing.
Yes, they still concede goals – but that only makes our games more exciting. They have scored in eight of the last nine games and show both breakthrough power and set-piece threats. Against a DC team that often falls low and struggles with structure, there could be room for more than one netminder.
What can we expect?
Nashville comes in with pressure, confidence and clear intentions. They don't have to control the ball the entire game, but they know how to punish weak structure, and DC has shown more than enough of that.
DC will probably try to be compact and focus on counterattacks, but without Benteke and with low efficiency, it is difficult to see them being able to match Nashville over 90 minutes.
If the away team scores first, which they often do – then this will open up. And that's when Nashville can really punish. I think Nashville can both control and punctuate the game here.
