Chaos in the capital

A new round of MLS is underway, and at Audi Field in Washington DC, the stage is set for a meeting between the bottom and the top – both in terms of standings and star power. Home team DC United is trying to salvage what can be salvaged from the season, while Inter Miami is in the process of building something that actually resembles a team that can go deep in the playoffs.

And yes, Messi is still the big question. After a great game against LA Galaxy, he was suddenly absent again against Tigres, and it is still uncertain whether he will play at all. But honestly: Messi is not the reason we are throwing ourselves into this game.

DC United – no capital for football at the moment

It's been a long time since DC United was anything to fear in MLS. The club has gone from being a pioneer in the league's early days to appearing as a gray mass of disappointment. Now they have only 5 wins in 27 games, and the table doesn't lie: last in the Eastern Conference, worst form in the league, and zero structure in their game.

They have managed to stop the bleeding with a 1-1 draw at home against Montreal, but that says a lot about how low the list is. The five games before that ended in losses – four of them without goals. During the entire season, DC United has only managed to score 23 goals – by comparison, Columbus Crew has scored 54.

It's not like there's any home strength to lean on either. At Audi Field they've lost four of their last five games, and in those five they've conceded 11 goals. It doesn't smell like promotion, so to speak.

Inter Miami - star in absence

Inter Miami are riding a wave of confidence. The team is in brilliant form and seems increasingly harmonious, whether Messi is playing or not. Luis Suárez proved to be a savior against Tigres in the Leagues Cup – and was directly leading the way with two penalty goals. It says something that Miami is winning such games without the world champion on the pitch.

With players like Busquets, Segovia, Alba and of course Suárez, Miami has plenty of attacking options to play with – and coach Javier Mascherano knows how to get the most out of his star players. It's also worth mentioning that Inter Miami have scored at least two goals in 6 of their last 7 matches, and in four of those they've scored in the first half.

Defensively they are not exactly tight, but that has not been a big problem as long as they deliver so much going forward. With a form that is pointing upwards and a DC opponent that neither scores nor defends, there is every reason to have faith in the away team.

Conclusion

The big question is whether Messi will play – but it seems likely he will start on the bench. However, that is of little importance to us. This analysis is about the value of the Miami offense – which has delivered results regardless of who is on the field.

DC United are in a dark period, and a match against this Inter Miami team is hardly the medicine. When the home team both leaks backwards and rarely threatens forwards, and the opponent is bursting with goals from several teams, then everything points to an away win with goals.
