Analysis Information
Can Columbus continue to punish weak away teams?
The MLS round kicks off with a match where home advantage could really come into its own. Columbus Crew host New England Revolution – two teams with vastly different forms and ambitions. Columbus has stabilized as a candidate at the top of the Eastern Conference, while New England seems to be in free fall. In other words, this is a meeting between a strong home team and a weak away team that is struggling to find its footing.
Columbus: A complete team in the tailwind
Columbus Crew enter this match with solid confidence after strong performances in both MLS and the Leagues Cup. They have gone undefeated in their last three matches, with a win against Puebla (3-1), a win against León (1-0), and a strong away match against Toronto that ended 1-1. The match before that was lost to Orlando, but that match was marked by rotation after the tough cup schedule.
At home, Columbus has been among the best in the league all season, with a high scoring rate and solid control of the field game. They have scored at least two goals in four of the last six games, and there are often several players who sign up for the goal record. It is an offensive collective that does not depend on one star player, but that attacks with width and depth.
Diego Rossi has started to find his rhythm, and his combination with Zawadzki and Moreira gives the team a dimension in attack that few other teams in the league can match. Defensively, there is still some work to be done, but when you create as many chances as Columbus does, it is often more than enough to win anyway
New England: A team in deep sporting crisis
New England Revolution are losing all touch with the middle of the table. After losing to Los Angeles FC in the last round, they have only won one of their last ten games – and six of the last seven have ended in defeat. In several of those games they have been completely outplayed, and in the away games there has been a common thread: they concede a lot of goals and rarely manage to respond.
A look back at their away records shows that they have lost away to, among others, NY Red Bulls (5-3), Montréal (3-1), Portland (2-1), and most recently LAFC (2-0). They have not kept a clean sheet away from home since April, and it seems as if the squad is characterized by low self-confidence and few real leaders.
The lineup is also not characterized by stability. There is frequent rotation in central positions, and the relationships are poor – especially defensively. It is also worth noting that New England often drops out of games completely when they are behind. They tend to concede the second goal right after the first, which makes it difficult to believe in a comeback if Columbus gets an early lead.
Conclusion
Columbus is a much more cohesive and in-form team at the moment. They are strong at home, and face a New England team that has had one of the weakest away seasons in MLS. At the same time, Columbus has breadth in the team and several offensive threats that can exploit the weaknesses of the visitors.
In other words, this is a game where Columbus has momentum, confidence, and the stats on their side. We believe they will take control and can quickly get the upper hand in both halves.
