Analysis Information
It's even on paper, but it's not even in practice. Columbus Crew and Nashville SC are tied on 27 points each, but Columbus gets to play at home, and that usually counts. Lower.com Field is a place where they build points, and this team simply looks more comfortable in safe surroundings.
Nashville? They're tough to face, but often struggle to dominate the game when they have to step out of their comfort zone. And they have to here.
I like what Columbus is doing – especially at home
Columbus has been one of the most consistent teams in the Eastern Conference, and that's no coincidence. There's structure to what they do, and there's balance in the team. The offense isn't always spectacular, but it's effective enough – especially at home.
In four of their last five on home turf, they have scored two goals or more, and overall they have looked solid against just this type of opponent. They have already beaten Nashville 2-0 earlier this year, and for good reason. It is not necessarily because Columbus is that much better individually, but because they know how to control these games – and because they get the best out of the framework they play in.
Nashville delivers, but there's a difference between home and away
Don't take it from them: Nashville is a good team. 26 goals scored and only 17 conceded shows they've found balance. They rarely concede much, and they score just enough to tip even games in their favor. But most of that has come at home.
Away from home it's something else. They've been inconsistent, a bit too passive, and often struggle to make their mark on the game. I don't think they'll go completely behind here, but I don't think they'll be able to take control either – and that makes it very interesting for overplays.
I expect goals – maybe not fireworks, but enough
Columbus should and should be the leading team here. They have confidence at home, and they have already shown that they can break down this Nashville team. At the same time, I am not confident enough that they will keep a clean sheet to play anything "safe" - because Mukhtar and Surridge can cause trouble anyway.
I think this will be a game where Columbus presses, Nashville counters – and both teams get enough chances to score. Not necessarily a goal celebration, but enough to cover the lines I'm going for.
