Analysis Information
After the international break and a break from the chaos of MLS, it's finally time for another round of goals, corners, defensive blunders and some American football magic on the pitch. And what better way to open than with Columbus Crew taking on Atlanta United – two teams that rarely play boring football?
Columbus smells like the top, while Atlanta… well, they smell more like a crisis. But these are exactly the kinds of duels MLS is made for: home-strong, revenge-hungry Columbus against an Atlanta that is either breaking loose or completely falling apart. We're looking forward to it.
Columbus Crew: New victory, new spark and home form that holds up
Columbus beat Vancouver 2-1 in the previous round and finally got their payback after a somewhat chaotic form curve. Diego Rossi was the match winner, and the team received a mental vitamin injection that came at the right time. They are now only six points behind the Philadelphia Union, and with a relatively manageable match schedule ahead, everything is in place for a small move up the table.
At home at Lower.com Field, they are a tough team to beat. The Crew have scored in 17 of their last 18 MLS games, and they are creating chances in succession. At the same time, they have not been completely tight at the back, and that is exactly the combination we love to play for: offensive power + defensive openings = goals either way.
Atlanta United: Tired, leaky and still dangerous
Atlanta has had a lackluster season. A 4-0 loss to New York City in the last round summed up much of what has gone wrong: weak structures, individual errors and a defense that leaks like a sieve. They have now conceded 34 goals in 18 games – and only three teams in all of MLS have had a worse defensive record.
But: they score regularly. They have actually been dangerous away from home as well, and even though the results have been lacking, they have been involved in games with a lot of action. They create corners, get crosses, and have enough offensive threats to trouble a Columbus team that is not exactly known for keeping a clean sheet.
What can we expect?
I expect a game that opens up quickly. Columbus will go for Atlanta's throat early, and that should go both ways. When two teams meet that both concede and score a lot, it rarely ends in a goalless draw.
Columbus has everything to play for, and Atlanta is playing with its back against the wall. That's the recipe for a goal-rich night, and considering the corners, especially from a chasing Atlanta, it also looks promising.
