Mile High, high pulse and playoff chase

On Saturday night, two teams that still have work to do to secure a playoff spot will burn out in the thin air in Colorado. The Rapids and Dynamo are both bordering on the Western Conference, and while neither can feel safe, it is the home team in particular that has now put pressure on themselves to fight back.

Colorado Rapids: Strong at home, but need answers

Rapids fans were treated to a spectacle recently when Atlanta United were beaten 3-1 here at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Once they get their attacking game going, there's little to complain about – the combinations are spot on, and they manage to use their height to bring opponents to their knees.

The problem is that they haven't been consistent enough. Two straight losses have put the playoff dream under pressure, and Chris Armas needs to get the players back to the level they showed against Atlanta. Offensively, there are plenty of weapons, but defensively we often see slip-ups that make them have to chase. For a betting market like ours, that's not the worst.

Houston Dynamo: Hard workers with a leaky back door

Houston has proven to be a team that refuses to give up. A home draw against the Galaxy last time out, a win away against St. Louis before that – they stay in the mix. Yet one thing remains constant: Dynamo on the road almost always means going backwards.

This means they rarely control games, but it opens up opportunities the other way. Ben Olsen has made the team work collectively, but even with a lot of effort they have difficulty closing. Against a Rapids team that knows that three points are absolutely necessary, it can be difficult to withstand the pressure.

What can we expect?

Here we have a meeting between two teams that really can't afford to make another mistake. The Rapids will use their home court, pace and offensive quality to break down the Dynamo. At the same time, Houston can't stand in line for boring 0-0 results - they simply give up too many for that to be realistic.

It therefore smells like an opening match, with Rapids in the lead, but where Dynamo can quickly contribute to the total score creeping up.
