Now it's serious. Regular league form means nothing anymore, this is about survival. Chicago Fire lost the first game on penalties, and thus find themselves with their backs pressed against the wall when Philadelphia Union comes to Soldier Field.

A draw is not good enough here. Chicago must win to force a third match. In other words: we will have a game with pace, desperation and a home team that is forced to attack.

Chicago Fire – always dangerous, always unfinished

Chicago is a team that rarely bores anyone. They play attacking football, massive wing pressure, and they always create chances. Their problem is that they often spend more energy creating pressure than finishing attacks.

In game one, Chicago was actually lively up front: 13 shots, continuous breaks up the middle, and big spaces behind the Philadelphia defense. That they lost on penalties is more due to inefficiency than performance.

But then comes the important point: Chicago never gives up. They are the team in MLS that is “always in”. They chase, shoot and press – and when they do, the corners come like a conveyor belt. Four have gone over 9.5 corners in 6 of their last 7 home games, and that is no coincidence – it is the style of play.

Philadelphia Union – just as efficient as the playoffs require

Union is everything Chicago is not: compact, cynical and brutally efficient. Two shots on goal, two goals. They don't need ten chances, two saves.

That doesn't mean they're parking the bus. In the first game they had the most ball, the most shots and 7 corners alone. With their full-backs high and wing-back crosses from the full 90 minutes, they always create set pieces. That's exactly why Philadelphia is so difficult to play against: they control the tempo, but let the opposition in enough to open up the games.

And this is an important point: Chicago has to move forward. Philadelphia is going to punish them in the spaces behind. That means finishing, blocking, clearances and corners. Lots of corners.

Conclusion

This is a perfect playoff game for corners. Chicago can't afford to be cautious. Union has no reason to be down. Both teams are creating chances, both teams are creating set pieces – and Game 1 ended with 12 corners.

Add that Chicago is at home. Add that they have to advance. Add that Union never plays at 0–0.

Then we end up somewhere: we get another match with high pressure on both ends.
