The Leagues Cup is back! The joint tournament between MLS and Liga MX, where goals, drama and sudden penalty shootouts abound. After last year's introduction, the Leagues Cup has established itself as a kind of North American version of the Europa League, only with an even looser framework, a faster pace and far more defensive collapses. Now CF Montréal will host Mexican Club León in a showdown between two teams that have seen better days, but who both know that the group stage can quickly give them new life.

CF Montréal: The bottom has been reached – and maybe it will turn around?

It's been a tough MLS season for Montreal. They are bottom of the Eastern Conference with 46 points in 25 games – the most in the league, in fact. However, there was some light at the end of the tunnel last weekend, when they beat the New England Revolution 3-1 at home. It was only their second win in 10 games, but it was a Montreal team with new energy and better coordination, and the great talent Sunusi Ibrahim finally showed a glimpse of what he can do.

The home team at least has the advantage of being in season and familiar with their own artificial turf. They also know that this is the most realistic path to success this year and a small cup run can turn a lot around in a tired dressing room.

Club León: Good memories, but weak form

León actually won the very first edition of the Leagues Cup, and have never been eliminated in the group stage – so they come here with a certain pride and history. But the team that has now traveled to Canada has big challenges. In the recently concluded Clausura tournament, they failed to reach the playoffs, and in the three Apertura matches before the trip here they have only scored three goals in total. This weekend they lost 1-4 against Cruz Azul, where James Rodríguez did get to show a bit, but the team lost both possession and duels.

León have had to travel long distances over the past week, dealing with the time difference, a new surface and a Montréal team that is sure to give them a fight from the start. They did have some big chances against Cruz Azul, but overall they have been tame up front and porous at the back, not a lucky combination away in the Leagues Cup.

Conclusion

These are two teams that are struggling to get results, but there are several factors that point in Montreal's direction: home field, match practice and a little optimism after the last match. León has a long way to go, is coming off a bad thrashing and has shown nothing in the Apertura that suggests they should be clear favorites here. In addition, we know that MLS teams are often underestimated in these meetings, especially at home.
