CF Monterrey – Inter 06-18-85

Analysis Information
On Tuesday night, Monterrey and Inter Milan will plunge into the newly launched Club World Cup with everything to prove. It is not everyday that the Champions League finalist from Europe visits – and for Monterrey, who represent the proud Liga MX, this is both a showdown of honor and a possible awakening after a somewhat difficult spring. It will also be a match marked by a new start for both teams. Both come with new coaches, big question marks, and even bigger expectations. It is ready for a change of scene, a new script and (hopefully) lots of goals.
Monterrey: Freshly shot, underrated and ready for a change of scene
Monterrey surprisingly crashed out of both the CONCACAF Champions League and Liga MX before the summer, costing coach Demichelis his job. In came Torrent – known for his offensive philosophy and for making an impact on the game from the first kick of the ball.
There is quality here. Monterrey are one of the most expensive teams in Mexico in recent years, and at their best they create a lot going forward. They have players like Berterame and Canales, and although their form has been weak, this is no slouch. They have little to lose, and a rare opportunity to bite back against European opposition.
They only lost 1-0 in the cup match against Inter the last time they met in 2022, and now they stand with new energy and a new project. That often means chaos, space and a match with an uneven pace. In other words: goal opportunities.
Inter Milan: Europe's second best – and maybe a bit on a revenge quest?
It can't have been easy to stand in the dressing room after a 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final. Inter were outplayed, ridiculed and ultimately blown off the pitch. That loss cost coach Simone Inzaghi his job, and now it's Cristian Chivu who has been given the honour of guiding the star-studded team forward.
Inter come into this match as clear favorites, and rightly so. The roster alone should give the Monterrey preview a little chill. But at the same time: they've been shaking their heads about their structure for weeks. Taremi is stranded in Iran. Calhanoglu is injured. It's unclear how much rhythm this team actually has.
At the same time, it's Inter – and once the team attacks with Barella, Asllani and Dumfries in the driving seat, it's a bang. They want a win here, and they want to use the match to wash away their Champions League nightmare. And with an opponent who can get behind, the stage is set for just that.
What can we expect?
I expect a match where Inter takes command, but where Monterrey will have periods where they really try to attack. Both teams are in a new phase with new coaches, and that usually affects the structure more than it affects the creativity. I don't think we will have any tactical positional war, this could be open. Inter is the favorite, but Monterrey is more than capable of contributing to a goal-oriented match. And the price of overplay? It is higher than it should be.
