Analysis Information
We are approaching the end of August, and for Bodø/Glimt that means one thing: the time has come to chase the Champions League dream – again. After reaching the playoffs three times before without success, the yellows are now on the doorstep again. Opponents this time: Sturm Graz. First match at Aspmyra, where Glimt usually fires up high pressure and artificial turf magic. It is a team that thrives in Europe, but this time they have to deliver from the first kick.
Bodø/Glimt – New autumn in the north
Glimt come into this match with a straight back and a big smile. After a slight dip in form at the start of the summer, it now looks like they have found their way back to what we know them for: pace, creativity and goals.
They recently beat Strømsgodset 0–5 away from home – a result that confirms a strong trend. Glimt now have only one loss in their last ten games, and offensively they have found a good mix: Jens Petter Hauge has regained his footing, Kasper Høgh is fiery in front of goal, and Patrick Berg controls the midfield like few others in Scandinavia. With both Evjen and Saltnes also available, the quality oozes forward.
This is Glimt's first match in this year's qualifiers, and with full focus on this particular doubleheader, they have prepared well. They know what is at stake – and how important it is to get a good start at home.
Sturm Graz – a good team with some scratches in the paint
Sturm Graz are Austria's second-best team – at least they were last season. They are coming off the opening weekend of the Bundesliga, and it hasn't been a smooth ride so far. They lost 2-1 at home to Rapid Wien in the first round, before recovering with a 3-1 away win against Ried at the weekend.
In addition, they lost 2-3 against Strasbourg in a training match just before the start of the season, which suggests that they are still working on getting their structure in place defensively.
Sturm is still a solid team with a lot of experience from European matches. They have experience in both the backline and in midfield, and are unlikely to be stressed by the atmosphere at Aspmyra. But I notice that they have conceded goals in all three of their last matches, and that should be good news for a Glimt team that knows how to create chances.
What kind of fight are we getting?
Glimt has a habit of going out on a limb on home soil in Europe. It's unlikely to be any different here. We expect a Bodø team that takes the initiative from the start and wants to get a result they can take with them to Austria.
Sturm, on the other hand, will probably prioritize structure and security. Maybe they will lay down a little lower and try to catch Glimt on counterattacks. But if we are to believe form, rhythm and home field advantage, this should be a match where the northerners control most of what happens.
Conclusion
These are two teams that have a lot of goals in them – but also two teams at different points in the season. Glimt is in the middle of competition mode and is coming off a big win. Sturm is still finding its rhythm. With Aspmyra as the stage and the Champions League as the carrot, we think Glimt will take an important victory in the first act.
