Last round of Ligue 1

Ligue 1 – last round of the league

ends the Ligue 1with a full simultaneous round, and although both gold and direct relegation have already been decided, there are still huge dramas left at both the top and bottom. PSG is the league champion, Lens has secured second place and the Champions League, while Nantes and Metz are already ready for Ligue 2. Nevertheless, the fight for Europe is alive and well, where the difference between third and seventh place means everything from the Champions League to nothing. At the same time, Nice, Auxerre and Le Havre are fighting desperately to avoid the qualifying place at the bottom. As always in France, the last round of the league means live tables, nervous supporters and matches that can change completely from minute to minute.

Marseille–Rennes

This is without a doubt one of the biggest matches of the evening. Both teams are fighting for the European places, and the margins are so small that a win could send a team to the Champions League, while a loss could end in the Conference League or nothing at all. Marseille have been strong at home at the Velodrome for much of the season, but the pressure will be enormous from the first kick of the ball. Rennes is also a team that thrives when matches open up, and they have enough offensive qualities to punish Marseille if the home team becomes too aggressive. This smells of a match with a high tempo, intense atmosphere and great outbursts of emotion throughout the evening. If there are early goals in other matches, this match could also be far more open than it starts as. Everything is set for drama.

Lille–Auxerre

Here, two teams meet with enormous pressure, but for completely different reasons. Lille is fighting for the Champions League and Europe, while Auxerre is desperately trying to avoid the qualifying place at the bottom. This makes the match extremely difficult to read tactically. Lille will probably dominate the ball and press high from the start, but at the same time they know that one miscue can be costly. Auxerre will probably play with low risk and hope for counterattacks or set pieces. Nerves could be a big factor here, especially if results elsewhere go against the teams along the way. This feels like a typical match that can explode after the first goal.

Strasbourg–Monaco

Monaco enter the final round of the season with enormous pressure in the battle for the Champions League places. They also face a Strasbourg team that often causes big problems at home with aggressive and direct play. Monaco is one of the league's most offensive teams, and they are unlikely to change their approach even though a lot is at stake. Therefore, this could quickly become a very entertaining match with big spaces both ways. The live table could also have enormous importance in the end of the match, especially if Marseille or Lille drop points. Monaco knows that one goal can be the difference between direct Champions League and qualification. This is a match that has the potential to be completely chaotic in the last half hour.

Lyon–Lens

Lens have already secured second place and can play much more freely than Lyon in this match. The home team, however, is under great pressure and probably needs points to secure European play next season. Lyon will therefore probably go on the offensive from the start, especially at home in front of their own supporters. At the same time, this could suit Lens well, because they are very dangerous when they get counterattacks in space. Much will depend on how much Lens chooses to rotate after securing the Champions League. This could be a very open match if Lyon gets impatient early.

Nice–Metz

Metz are already relegated, but for Nice this is a match of destiny. They need points in the last round of the league to be sure of avoiding the qualification place, and thus the pressure will be enormous from the first minute. On paper this looks like a manageable task at home against a Metz team with nothing to play for, but such matches are often far more difficult than the table suggests. Nice know that one miscue can ruin the entire season, while they will be nervously following the results of Auxerre and Le Havre along the way. If there is an early goal behind, nerves can spread quickly both on the pitch and in the stands. Metz can also play completely fearlessly and have the opportunity to cause problems for a home team that needs to advance. This smells like a match where emotions can completely take over throughout the evening.

Lorient–Le Havre

Le Havre is one of the teams that still risks qualifying, and therefore this will be a match characterized by nervousness. Lorient has less to play for, which often makes such matches extra dangerous. If the results in Nice or Auxerre go the wrong way along the way, the pressure on Le Havre could be enormous beyond the second half. It could lead to a very closed match at the start, before everything opens up if one team has to chase a score late. Such last-round matches often live a life of their own.

Paris FC – PSG

PSG are already league champions and naturally have one eye on what lies ahead. The big question is therefore how strong a team they choose to field. For Paris FC, however, this is the biggest match of the season, both sportingly and emotionally. The derby feeling alone makes this a special end to the season. If PSG rotate a lot, this could be far more even than the table suggests.

Nantes–Toulouse

Nantes are already relegated, and the mood around the club will likely determine this match. The focus is mostly on how the team ends the season in front of its own fans. Toulouse therefore faces a team that can either play completely free or be mentally empty after relegation. Such matches often turn out to be more open than expected.

Brest–Angers

This is one of the few matches in the final round with relatively little pressure on the teams. That is precisely why it can be a quite entertaining finish. When the consequences are less, the teams often play more freely and offensively. This can result in an open match with a high tempo and more chances than you might expect.
