Analysis of:
Wolverhampton–Tottenham

Written by: Svein Egeland

Analysis Information
Wolverhampton are no longer playing for hope, but for duty. They are already down, already done, already a team that looks like it is just waiting for the season to end. Tottenham, on the other hand, come here with a completely different weight on their shoulders. They still have something to lose, and that is precisely why this will be a match where the difference in motivation could be at least as important as the difference in quality.
Wolverhampton – game over
Wolverhampton, as mentioned, are already done with this season. They have fallen through over time, and what once seemed like a small glimmer of spring is now long gone in a swamp of weak results. The loss to Leeds, where they went on a clear 3-0 defeat, only underlined how little is working at the moment. With 17 points, three wins and 21 losses after 32 games, they are left as a team that is not only heavily marked by defeat, but also completely devoid of momentum.
At the same time, it is worth noting that youngster Mateus Mané has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise grey season, although that story too has lost some of its luster as the team has collapsed around him. However, it is not enough to change the overall picture: Wolves are at the bottom, and their statistics tell the story of a team that has struggled both defensively and disciplinaryly throughout the year. The season simply cannot end soon enough.
Tottenham - with the knife at the throat
Tottenham are about to do what many thought was unthinkable; namely, repeat last year. Five rounds before the end, they are below the line, and it is a position that makes the entire end of spring a test. As mentioned, they were in a similar situation last year, but that time the victory in the Europa League probably overshadowed the seriousness. But now there is no longer room to hide behind names, history or expectations.
Because while Wolverhampton have probably given up, Tottenham still have to fight to save face. They need three points here, and anything else would be another blow to a season that has already been full of missteps. Recent results have not given much reason for optimism either, and when they let the victory against Brighton in extra time last time out, it only became even clearer how fragile the situation is. This is a team that makes things unnecessarily complicated for themselves, and right now it seems as if the pressure weighs more on them than it drives them forward.
Roberto De Zerbi is certainly a coach with both experience and a clear football philosophy, but the question is whether Tottenham really need a coach who will play from behind with small margins right now, when what they primarily need are points, security and the ability to make it easy. On paper it may be beautiful, but in the final battle it is the results that count.
Conclusion – eat, or be eaten
Tottenham also have high statistics they would rather not have, with a lot of cards and many free kicks. This speaks volumes about a team that struggles with both control and keeping a cool head when the games get tight. This is therefore not a match that will necessarily be pretty, and it is therefore natural to think in the direction of cards and free kicks when we are going to land on our main bet.
But we also note that Wolverhampton actually produced the most corners in the away game against Leeds last time, and we know Tottenham are good for a lot of corners. Especially in games where they have to go forward. But Tottenham have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since the first day of the year, and they should have at least one goal more than their opponent here, so the overbet is also tempting. At very good odds.
However, we have to make a choice, and in a game where there are many temptations, we land on the game that feels safest to us. Because it is not inconceivable that Wolves will sell themselves dearly. Perhaps the away team will have to work for the goals. They were unable to break down either Sunderland or Nottingham, and should they take some time to take the lead here, or even better; should they fall behind, the corners will be loose.
So when we know that Wolverhampton give away 5.94 corners on average, and not least that the away team MUST go forward, we try the following bet ;
England at 16:00: Wolverhampton - Tottenham: Tottenham over 5 corners - Asian (1.70)
Alternative games:
England at 16:00: Wolverhampton - Tottenham: Over 2.5 goals (1.75)
England at 16:00: Wolverhampton - Tottenham: Over 4.5 cards (2.25)
England at 16:00: Wolverhampton - Tottenham: Over x fouls (tba)
