Finally back: Norway's worst hate crime

Finally, Norway's biggest and fiercest match is back. Both clubs have been bottom of the Obos league in their respective years, and have not met since 2023. In 2023, Geir Bakke was Lillestrøm's coach at Intility Arena, but Vålerenga is coaching at Åråsen. This will be another match that will smell burnt, literally. For pyro, I think we will see that on Sunday afternoon!

When Vålerenga and Lillestrøm meet, it's as if the whole of Eastern Norway takes a breath at the same time. This is not just a football match. It's a match loaded with history, identity and an intense, almost personal animosity that has built up over generations. The distance between Oslo and Lillestrøm is short in kilometers, but enormous in emotions.

Vålerenga – Solid foundation – but still unfulfilled offensively

Vålerenga has opened the 2026 season in a way that both gives reason for optimism, but at the same time leaves a feeling that there is still more to be achieved. In terms of results, they have started well, and stand with two wins, a draw and a loss, with a goal difference of 4-2. Positives with Vålerenga so far this year are that they seem very structured at the back, and have been stable defensively. The team appears compact and has so far been difficult to break down and has so far shown that they do not lose control completely as they have done in previous seasons.

The players also seem more motivated and have better self-confidence than in previous seasons. After the previous result in Fredrikstad, the players seemed very disappointed with the result, even though Vålerenga did not control the game at all. To me, it indicates that they want and want more.

The offensive has been a bit too slow so far this season, and there has been a lack of both pace and creativity in the crucial phases. When they don't get the first goal, the game often becomes locked, and the margins take on an even greater role. Even though they haven't been that decisive in front of goal, it has resulted in something else. Corners. Vålerenga has been involved in a lot of corners so far this year. At home they have 17-12 (14.5 on average) in corners (7-7 and 10-5) and away 23-8 (15.5 on average, 16-6 and 7-2).

Lillestrøm – Newly promoted – but already at full height

Lillestrøm has entered the 2026 season with a weight of its own, and perhaps more importantly, a clear identity. This is not just a newly promoted team trying to survive. It is a team that comes in with confidence, structure and a winning mentality that was built through a dominant season in the OBOS league the year before.

Lillestrøm has started the season very well, and so far they are undefeated and stand with three wins and one draw with a goal difference of 7-2. Lillestrøm has beaten the two promoted teams Start and Aalesund, as well as an away win against Molde. In the previous round of the league on Wednesday, they took a very strong point against Tromsø away from home.

They have scored consistently, and they have been good defensively with few goals conceded. They are structured, disciplined and comfortable in the game they have played.

Although the start has been strong, this is still a team that does not necessarily dominate matches completely. They live a lot on efficiency, structure and timing. Their matches can tilt either way if the margins turn, and their offensive play is still more functional than spectacular.

Although they were promoted from the Obos league last year, this year's Lillestrøm team is not a "newly promoted team" that opponents can underestimate.

So far this year they have only played one home game, and there they have produced 3-5 in corners, but on the road they have played 3 games and are currently 15-16 (10.33 on average, 6-5, 6-4 and 3-7).

Derby without a solution – anything can happen

And when the referee blows the whistle, all that is called form, table and expectations disappears. The match picture often becomes chaotic, intense and brutally honest. The tackles are a little harder, the duels last a little longer, and the margins… they are often decided by will more than quality. This is a match that can be won by either team, and has been one of Europe's most even derbies, where Lillestrøm has 33 wins and Vålerenga has 32. The match in the stands will also be relatively even, even though the majority of the stadium will be blue.

In today's match I don't dare to play marking or over or under, the match will live its life, and can go in all directions. There will be hard tackles and the cards may be loose, but both teams will attack and thus also create corners. For this reason I choose to go for the following bet;
