Analysis Information
Rivalry, prestige and pressure – with a little political pressure
NRG Stadium in Houston is the host when the two biggest rivals in the CONCACAF Gold Cup meet once again with the trophy cabinet at stake. The USA has home field advantage and momentum, but Mexico has a more coordinated and experienced team – and a defense that has barely conceded a goal. In addition, there is a never-so-small political game led by a certain unpredictable president who can provide an extra vitamin injection both on the field and in the stands. I wonder what Trump might say if the USA loses this duel…
Pochettino has brought in a new generation of players, with Diego Luna looking like the tournament's breakout star. But there's no doubt that Aguirre has built a team that rarely makes mistakes, and that could be crucial in a final where the margins are slim.
USA: Impressive tournament with a newly composed team
The United States has reached the Gold Cup final for the third time in the last four editions, and Mauricio Pochettino can now secure his first trophy as national team manager – after being heavily criticised before the tournament began. A victory here would also be the country's eighth Gold Cup title overall.
Even with a so-called "B" team, made up mostly of MLS players, the Americans have impressed. They went undefeated through the group stage, beat Costa Rica in the quarterfinals on penalties, and advanced from the semifinals after Diego Luna produced a raw performance with two goals in a 2-1 win over Guatemala. Luna has really stepped up in the absence of Christian Pulisic, arguably the star of the tournament for the United States. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored in both knockout games and scored the fastest goal in a Gold Cup playoff game in U.S. history (3:16) in the semifinals. With play like this, Real Salt Lake's next step will soon be to Europe.
The 37-year-old veteran Ream holds the defense together and the last line Freese has been stable throughout the tournament. Malik Tillman has also delivered solidly in attack, and could be a key player alongside Luna in the final. In addition, captain Adams could get his 50th cap – a strong symbol of continuity in a team otherwise characterized by many new faces.
The United States has had the upper hand over Mexico in finals this decade, winning all four of the last four finals the teams have met in – with three clean sheets on the record. In other words, the mental advantage is strongly in America’s favor, especially after their 1-0 victory in the 2021 final. But this year’s CONCACAF edition is a bit different, this time with a seasoned Mexican team with a dash of young talent…
Mexico: Steely defensively and hungry for revenge
Javier Aguirre has led Mexico to his second Gold Cup final as coach, and is chasing his second trophy after the 2009 title. El Tri can win their tenth Gold Cup title – and at the same time avenge their losses to the United States in previous finals. There will be no shortage of motivation heading into this final.
The tournament has been characterised by rock-solid defensive play from Mexico, who have kept four straight clean sheets and have allowed just 1.6 shots on goal per game – the lowest average of the entire tournament. In the semi-final, it was Raúl Jiménez who secured the victory over Honduras, after an assist from 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, who thus made Gold Cup history. And Honduras didn’t get much done in the semi-final either, with an xG of 0.10.
Aguirre has made the team perform at their best in the second half – a full 7 of the 8 goals in the tournament have been scored after halftime. This is perhaps a testament to Aguirre's effective halftime speeches, but even more so to a patient Mexico team that doesn't stress in the build-up phases. Álvarez dominates in midfield, and Malagón has barely had anything to do in goal – but has done what is needed with authority.
The question is whether Mexico can be more effective in attack. They have struggled at times to translate dominance into goals, and the attacking interplay has at times seemed dependent on individual performances. Still – if it comes to a tactical duel, Aguirre is a coach who knows how to win such games.
Conclusion: An even final that could go either way
The USA have the psychological advantage from previous finals and have an offensive energy in the team, but Mexico appear more structured and confident in their play. That is often the difference in even finals – and this time we think it will hold for El Tri, who lift their 10th Gold Cup title after a tactical triumph in Houston. The main tip is therefore:
CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at 01:00: USA - Mexico: Mexico wins the trophy (1.80)
