We're back in Pennsylvania for the 125th edition of the US Open, and this time we're back in the country, with historic Oakmont Country Club hosting the event for the 10th time, the most of any club in the championship's history. A total of 156 star players are in the field, and world number one Scottie Scheffler, coming off a win at the Memorial, is looking for his second major triumph of the year after winning the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

The pitch it is played on

Oakmont Country Club is perhaps the most feared and respected golf course in the United States, and for good reason. It represents the essence of classic, brutal American championship golf with its lightning-fast, undulating greens, over 200 strategically placed deep bunkers and narrow fairways. In addition, thousands of trees have been removed on and around the course, making it more exposed to the wind than before. Even without water in play, this course is considered one of the most difficult courses in the world.

The course is located in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, was designed by Henry Fownes and opened in 1903. It plays as a Par 70, 7,372 yards long and has some demanding Par 4 holes, such as hole 1 at over 480 yards, hole 3 which shares the fairway with a bunker and hole 17 which is very important to hit shots on, but possible to drive all the way in. So here you just have to get out the popcorn!

Two exciting players at Oakmont

Patrick Cantlay should be the perfect guy for Oakmont. Tactically smart, mentally strong, good at avoiding big mistakes and staying in the game. Cantlay also has precision off the tee and is consistently good with the putter. He has a bit of a go around the green, but he rarely needs it, because in the Green in Regulation statistics he is number three. If he gets a good start and avoids mistakes early, he can control the tournament with his patient style, and fight at the top on the last day of the tournament. I think he will finish higher, but I'm guessing he will top 20.

Shane Lowry 's playing style fits well on this course, and he has played well here before. Lowry has good ball control and is very precise with irons and wedges, in addition to playing well in the wind and on hard greens. He is one of the best around the green on Tour with his creativity, in addition to being tough and skilled from difficult rough. In the Approach to the Green statistics, he is number two of all, which speaks for itself. His putting has been so-so, but he loves these tournaments and I think he will step up in the major tournament. If he gets a solid week with the driver and putter, he is actually a winner candidate. I'm hedging a bit and betting Lowry in the top 20 as well.

I have a little more faith in Cantlay in this tournament, and therefore my main tip is:

Golf at 12:45: Patrick Cantlay top 20 (2.25)

Alternative game, or in addition to:

Golf at 12:45: Shane Lowry top 20 (2.30)
