Two teams that both want to challenge for the biggest titles, but also two teams in search of their own identity. Manchester City have been dominant in England for a long time now, but at this point we probably just have to realize that the glory days are over. The supporting beams that have ensured a continuous replenishment of silverware have expired, and the club is in the process of building something new. So far, it is not working well, and the defeats have come one after another. Real Madrid became too strong, and Liverpool became too strong. Not only do you lose away from home, you are also outplayed on your own turf. If the Etihad was quiet before, you can hear a pin drop now. There is little that resembles Pep's invincible machine, and with almost the entire central line either aging or injured, you are left with a team that is now losing football matches. Tottenham, for its part, has had a challenging season, with an incredible number of defeats. One loss has followed another, which has resulted in an existence in the bottom half. But, aren't we seeing some improvement? There have been some victories on the line now, and the timing to meet the reigning champions could hardly have been better.

Tottenham – In the Count's time

Tottenham finally got enough players back to be able to field a team again. Everyone has probably been in the hospital in recent weeks, but now things are looking a little brighter. Solanke is still missing, but the goals seem to be coming anyway. Happy for Spurs, because things have really been going downhill here recently. There have been three wins on the rap now, and finally three points at home. The Reds from Manchester were beaten 1-0, and Tottenham have slowly but surely climbed towards the middle of the table. 19-year-old Tel flanked by Johnson and Son creates a dynamic attacking line, and the contributions of Kulusevski and Maddison complement the trio in a nice way. An injury-free Tottenham certainly has the players to please the fans.

What can we expect from here on out from a team that aims to be among the top five or six in the country? It is difficult to dismiss Tottenham based on three straight wins in the league, but at the same time, it is also not a given that the team has underperformed throughout the season. There is something alive in Spurs, and with fewer injuries they can certainly catch up with the best. The best example of this must be the reverse fixture at the end of November. At the Etihad, against a full-strength Manchester City, Tottenham shocked with a rock-solid away win. No less than four goals, led by a brilliant Maddison. I wonder if there are any uncertain men in light blue who will make the trip to London this February day. Tottenham also have 53 goals so far this season, second best in the league, only behind leaders Liverpool.

Manchester City – Only the ruins remain

It's a bit unbelievable how the season of the giants from Manchester would turn out. Nobody had predicted this. At the moment of writing, the reigning champions are 20 points behind Liverpool at the top of the table, with two points to clear for eighth place. The chance is certainly there that the season will ebb without a trophy, and without a Champions League place for next season. Top this with a bad consequence of the 130 charges hanging over the club, and the adventure could simply be over.

What about the bright spots? They are a bit hard to find right now. In that sense, it must be that the additions from the winter window show flashes of class, while Haaland can reach the match against Tottenham. Beyond this, you will have to look hard and long to see something that really makes it buzz. City have faced Arsenal and Liverpool in the last couple of weeks, two teams that are direct competitors for the league title. Both games were lost, with a goal difference of 1-7. The numbers really tell the whole story, Manchester City are practically parked this season.

We have mentioned the reverse fixture, where Spurs won 4-0. City have conceded 38 goals in 25 league games, in fact only one more than Spurs, who were completely wrecked a couple of weeks ago. 38 goals against are evidence of a top team that has lost its self-confidence, and if you look behind the numbers you will find a number of personal mistakes, as well as a midfield that is unable to either protect its own defence or keep up with the high tempo week after week. Important high-class players have dropped significantly in quality, and the generational change can no longer be postponed. Of course, there is also a Rodri hole in this midfield. Every team in the world would have missed the winner of the Golden Ball.

Conclusion – What gives?

Either Tottenham register their fourth straight W in the league, or City finally fight back. Or, maybe something in between? We try to relate to the numbers, and they say that Tottenham are scoring goals again. Seven league goals in the last three, and the knowledge that they can beat the light blues, gives the necessary confidence. Manchester City knows that they have to perform better, but that they will be able to weed out all the mistakes overnight seems unlikely. We don't think Spurs will win 4-0 again, but we shouldn't rule out that they will win either. We'll see if Haaland increases the chances of the away team, but after what we saw against Liverpool last time, there are many opportunities to punish the reigning champions. We take a gamble and go for a mark in tonight's big game, although with a guard. HU at 1.85 seems tempting, and maybe we don't need the security of double marking at all. Momentum is the alpha and omega in the world of sports, and as of now this lies with the home team.
