The stage is set for an exciting clash between two teams in the tailwind, both coming off victories in the previous round of the league. The season is starting to settle in, and we are seeing more clearly the contours of which teams have ambitions to assert themselves from the start. Both Torino and Atalanta enter this match with almost equal conditions, and it will be interesting to see who takes the initiative on Sunday evening.

Turin – with the wind

Torino got off to a brutal start to this year's Serie A season when Marco Baroni and his men were crushed 5-0 away to Inter in the opening round. This was followed by a goalless draw at home to Fiorentina – a result that was met with some relief, given the fresh memory of the Inter fade. However, the real breakthrough came in the previous round: a strongly performed 1-0 win away to Roma, where loanee Giovanni Simeone scored the match-winner.

With two straight games without a defeat and an impressive away win under their belt, Torino have gained much-needed momentum ahead of their clash with Atalanta. However, their offensive efforts have been sluggish; the team's only goal so far came after a partnership between Napoli duo Simeone and Ngonge, before Simeone placed the ball beautifully into the far corner.

Low-scoring games were also a feature last season, when Torino only averaged around one goal per game. For now, there is little indication of a drastic change, but new reinforcements could help increase the offensive power over time.

Marco Baroni was hired in June after leaving Lazio, where he is known for creating a solid team. His philosophy is based on high intensity, structural discipline and many players on the right side of the ball. He wants to overpopulate the offensive to create space for the wings and wing-backs, but this requires both high running capacity and a great willingness to recover. When the team becomes more coordinated in this style of play, it is natural to expect Torino to gradually improve throughout the season – perhaps already against Atalanta.

Atalanta – The Quest for Ancient Heights

It has been a turbulent summer for the Bergamo team. Club legend Gian Piero Gasperini, who led Atalanta for nine years, chose to leave the club and take over at Roma. In addition, the club sold last year's top scorer in Serie A, who scored 25 goals and provided 8 assists, to Saudi Arabia's Al Qadasiya - a move that surprised many. As if that wasn't enough, Ademola Lookman tried to force a transfer through. It didn't work out, but he has since been relegated to individual training and has yet to play this season.

Results-wise, it also started poorly: 1–1 against both Pisa and Parma, two teams Atalanta would normally dominate. The team appeared uninspired and far from the offensive and energetic expression we have become accustomed to in recent years.

Then came the upturn: 4–1 at home to Lecce. The victory was expected, but the margin and the performance gave much-needed confidence. Charles De Ketelaere and new signing Nicola Zalewski made their mark, while striker Nikola Krstovic provided two assists in just 34 touches of the ball.

On Wednesday, however, a much tougher test awaited: an away match against Paris Saint-Germain in Atalanta's first Champions League match under new coach Ivan Juric. It was a painful experience – a clear 4-0 defeat to the star-studded Parisians. The team was simply run down, and now it's all about how they respond after such a setback.

Summary

Torino have made a solid comeback after a difficult start to the season, and they have a good grip on Atalanta – they went undefeated against the Bergamo side last season with one win and one draw. At the same time, it is risky to write Atalanta off based on the defeat in Paris; this is still a team with an extremely high level of top-flight quality when they hit the mark with their play.

Everything is set for an intense and tactical duel – a main course on the menu in what will be a five-course football Sunday in Serie A.
