Three justifications for the game proposal
- Storhamar has controlled both puck possession and shooting statistics in recent games.
- They score on their chances, while the Oilers struggle more in front of goal.
- Storhamar plays more controlled and punishes mistakes, especially if the Oilers take penalties.
Storhamar has had a dream start to the semi-final series, and the way it has happened means that the pressure is now heavily placed on Stavanger Oilers before game three at Hamar. After winning the first two matches, and especially after a dominant away game in Stavanger, Storhamar appears to be the team in full control.
In game two, the Hamar team showed what they have when they hit the top level. They dominated the shooting statistics strongly, controlled the pace throughout much of the game and were clearly more efficient in front of goal. It wasn't just a win, it was a show of power. And I think it will happen again.
The playoff form is sitting
The most obvious thing after the first two games is that Storhamar has found the level that often characterizes them in the playoffs. They appear structured, patient and very disciplined in their play without the puck.
Three straight wins against the Oilers in the series and playoffs, all by two goals, underscore the same thing. These are no longer coincidences or small margins, this is a team that has taken control of its opponent.
Especially the way they win pucks and establish plays in the offensive zone has been crucial. When Storhamar first gets the pressure on, the Oilers struggle to play out. We saw this most recently in the last game in Stavanger where the Oilers barely got the puck in the first 10-12 minutes.
The shooting statistics in the two semi-final matches also illustrate the difference. When one team dominates so clearly in shots, it says a lot about who is controlling the game.
Different paths to the semi-finals
The teams have had different entrances to this series.
The Oilers advanced from the quarterfinals with a comfortable win over Narvik after five games. It gave the team confidence, but the level of opposition was lower than what they face now.
Storhamar, on the other hand, has built on an already solid foundation. They have been stable over time and appear as a team with a clear identity, which is often crucial in the playoffs. The difference has become clear in the semifinals. Where the Oilers have varied in their performances, Storhamar has delivered at a high level in both games.
Oilers in a pressured situation
For the Stavanger Oilers, the starting point before game three is simple: They MUST win. Another loss would send them into an almost impossible situation. Because the chances of winning four straight against Storhamar are almost unthinkable. Those odds would be gigantic.
If they are to do that, they need to improve in several areas. First and foremost, they need to be more disciplined and avoid giving away opportunities to dominate. In addition, they need to become sharper offensively and take advantage of the chances they actually create.
It's also about matching the intensity. In the first two games, Storhamar has been the heaviest team in the duel game, and they have created their biggest opportunities. Therefore, they must keep five men on the ice at all times.
Home field advantage
Back in CC Amfi, Storhamar will once again be able to play to their strengths. At home, they are comfortable setting the pace and controlling the game.
With the crowd behind them, they can put the pressure on early and force the Oilers to chase the game. It's a situation the Stavanger team has had trouble handling so far in the series. And when Stavanger has to move forward, opportunities open up for Storhamar the other way.
Game three will be crucial for the entire semifinal series. If Storhamar goes up 3–0, it will take something truly extraordinary for the Oilers to turn this around.
There is therefore little doubt that Storhamar enters the match with a clear plan: Continue what they have done so far, and take another step towards the final.
Conclusion
Everything points to Storhamar continuing their dominance. They have been the best team on both ends of the ice, and they have shown a stability that the Oilers have not been able to match. If they stay disciplined, cut out stupid and unnecessary penalties, continue to win the shooting statistics and play like they can, it is difficult to see any other outcome than Storhamar winning again, and approaching another NM final.
