Three justifications for the game proposal

  • Storhamar scores on their chances, while the Oilers have wasted several big opportunities throughout the series.
  • Storhamar controls the pace, wins the shot statistics and plays more disciplined.
  • With a 3–0 record and a strong playoff record, Storhamar is in complete control, while the Oilers are playing under pressure.

The Oilers are pressured to win 0–3 in games, but have been on a par with Storhamar at times, especially in game three. The problem has been efficiency – they miss big chances and get punished. Storhamar, on the other hand, wins on the details: better structure, discipline and scoring. They also tend to score first and take control of the game. Even after winning last time, Petter Thoresen was dissatisfied, which indicates a team that wants to go up another level. The Oilers have to hit their chances, but everything points to Storhamar deciding and securing a place in the final.

Semi-final 4: Stavanger Oilers – Storhamar

It's now or never for Stavanger Oilers. With a 0–3 record against Storhamar, the situation is brutal before game four in DNB Arena: a loss, and the season is over. At the same time, the visitors from Hamar are on the threshold of another NM final, and everything indicates that they want to decide this as quickly as possible.

But behind the clear numbers lies a more nuanced picture. Game three at Hamar showed that the Oilers are not as far behind as the results suggest. At times they were on par with Storhamar, and they created several great opportunities to tilt the game in their favor.

The problem has been the same throughout the series: efficiency. Time and time again, the Oilers have had what must be described as 100 percent chances, and time and time again they have been burned. In playoff hockey, it is merciless. When you don't score, you are punished by a team like Storhamar.

It was especially evident towards the end of game three. The Oilers took out their goalie in search of an equalizer, but instead it was Storhamar who scored two goals into an open net and sealed the outcome. A game that had been evenly matched for a long time now had a more one-sided final result.

Storhamar: winning on the details

For Storhamar, this semi-final is all about control. They haven't necessarily been superior in every minute of play, but they have been the best where it counts. They win the shot statistics, they are more disciplined, and most importantly: they score on their chances.

There is also a clear tendency for Storhamar to often take the lead early in matches. The ability to capitalize on the first opportunities gives them a grip on the match, forcing the opponent to chase.

Still, Petter Thoresen wasn't satisfied after game three. Despite the victory, he felt that the team let the Oilers in too much and didn't deliver at the level he expected. It's a sign of what's to come, a Storhamar team that wants to improve even further, even with a 3–0 lead.

A mental battle

The starting point provides two very different approaches to the game.

The Oilers are playing with a knife at their throat. At the same time, it can provide a form of freedom, they have little to lose and everything to gain. The question is whether they can turn that into the right energy, or if frustration takes over again.

Storhamar, on the other hand, plays with confidence and calm. They know they have control of the series, but also that this is the opportunity to decide.

History offers hope – but not much

There is some belief in the Stavanger club that things can be turned around, based on past performances at home. The Oilers have been strong in the DNB Arena in the playoffs over the years.

At the same time, the reality is clear: against Storhamar it has often been difficult. Several of the playoff losses at home have come precisely against the Hamar team. The Oilers have won 66 of 82 playoff games in the DNB arena. However, 9 of 16 losses have come against Storhamar. And even more importantly, Storhamar has won all of the games in this year's playoffs and a total of 22 playoff games in a row.

What is needed?

For the Oilers, the recipe is simple – but demanding:

  • They need to start scoring on the big chances
  • They must stay out of the penalty box
  • They need to get the audience involved early

For Storhamar, it's about continuing:

  • Be disciplined
  • Be effective
  • Raising the level further after a match Thoresen was not happy with

What will be the outcome?

This could be the most even game of the series so far. The Oilers will come out with energy and desperation, and they have shown that they can cause problems for Storhamar at times. But the difference lies in the decisive moment. Storhamar scores on their chances. The Oilers do not.

And with a team that wasn't happy after their last win, and who knows that a final spot is within reach, it's hard to see them letting this opportunity slip away. Conclusion: Storhamar wins either in regular time or overtime, and gets the job done in Stavanger.
