Analysis Information
Will the home team keep up their form, or will the visit surprise?
At the Estadio El Molinón in Gijón, two traditional clubs meet in a Segunda División match. Sporting Gijón enters the match with growing confidence after a revival in form, while Real Zaragoza is struggling and finds itself at the bottom of the table. The home team has found its rhythm under a new coach and hopes to continue its climb, while the visitors are desperately looking for an upturn to turn around a difficult start to the season. The frame is set for a meeting where Sporting are the favourites at home, but Real Zaragoza come with a knife to their throats in the hunt for points.
Sporting Gijón: Safe at home
Sporting Gijón have stabilised in the mid-table after a variable start to the season. The team was level on points in their first ten games – five wins and five losses – but have now won two straight league games. The change of coach earlier in October seems to have had an immediate effect: Under new coach Borja Jiménez, Sporting won both their previous home game and last weekend's away game. The fans at El Molinón are feeling the optimism again, and their home form appears solid with three wins in five attempts in Gijón already. With passionate support from the stands, Sporting play with confidence on their home turf and have often managed to turn even matches in their favour at home.
Offensively, Sporting Gijón has been among the more productive teams in the league. A total of 16 goals in 10 matches is evidence of an attack that creates chances regularly. Young striker Jonathan Dubasin has made his mark with 5 goals so far, closely followed by César Gelabert with 4 goals. In addition, winger Juan Ferney Otero has contributed greatly – not only with 2 goals, but especially as a facilitator with 7 assists. Otero showed his class in the previous round when he scored twice in Sporting's strong 3–2 win away to Real Valladolid. At the same time, several others have contributed, and the breadth of the attack makes Sporting difficult to defend against. Defensively, Los Rojiblancos have admittedly been somewhat vulnerable and have conceded goals in most matches, but they are now finding their balance. The positive trend and the newfound winning habit give Sporting a solid platform in any case – especially at home, where the team feels safe and usually dictates the game.
Real Zaragoza: Looking for the rhythm
For Real Zaragoza, the start of the season has been difficult and characterised by instability. After ten league rounds, the club from Aragón is at the very bottom of the table. The result so far is only one win, three draws and a whopping six losses, which underlines the seriousness of the situation. The form is worrying – Zaragoza is coming off three straight league losses. The bottom was reached in the last match, when they suffered a humiliating 0–5 defeat at home to newly promoted Cultural Leonesa. That result was the third home defeat in a row of the season and illustrates a team in crisis. The defensive play completely collapsed in front of the home crowd, and self-confidence took a serious hit. The total goal difference after ten matches is 6–17, and with only six goals scored, Zaragoza has the league's weakest attack. Offensively, they have gone goalless in half of their matches. At the same time, they are now leaking backwards – a whopping nine goals conceded in the last two matches are evidence of a team that is struggling at both ends of the pitch.
It is clear that Real Zaragoza is still searching for rhythm and a functioning game plan. Coach Emilio Larraz has a big job to do to boost morale in the squad and find solutions that can stop the negative trend. On paper, the squad has experienced names, but few have delivered the goods so far. Striker Dani Gómez tops the meager scoring statistics with a modest 2 goals, while expected mainstays such as Kenan Kodro, Mario Soberón and Sebas Moyano only have one goal each. A lack of self-confidence offensively means that Zaragoza often becomes back-heavy and wait-and-see in matches. On the away field, they have indeed taken their only win of the season – a narrow 1–0 triumph against Mirandés in September – which indicates that they can bite with disciplined defense under the right circumstances. If they are to take anything away from Gijón, they will probably have to go back to basics: close up at the back, work hard in the duels and hope for a result on a counterattack or set piece. Real Zaragoza is historically a big club with proud traditions, but at the moment the team is struggling for a stable form curve. Against a strong home team Sporting, the visitors will be happy if they can fight their way to points – which requires a completely different energy and organization than what they have shown recently.
Conclusion: Is there hope for Zaragoza?
Based on form and constellation, it is likely that Sporting Gijón will take the initiative and control this match at home. The home team has found the winning formula again and is playing with increasing self-confidence, while Real Zaragoza seems to lack both form and confidence in their game. Football is certainly unpredictable, but there is much to suggest that Sporting has a golden opportunity to secure three new points in front of their own supporters. Zaragoza will have to surpass themselves defensively and show a team morale we have not seen before, if they are to prevent another defeat. All in all, home advantage and current form indicate that Sporting Gijón has the upper hand in this match.
We therefore play;
Segunda Division at 18:30: Sporting Gijon - Real Zaragoza: Sporting Gijon win (1.82)
