Analysis of:
Sandnes Ulf – Vard Haugesund – 27-09-2025

Analysis Information
Two teams with very different starting points meet when Sandnes Ulf hosts Vard Haugesund at Østerhus Arena on Saturday afternoon. Sandnes Ulf is fighting intensely for the one and extremely important goal before the season: direct promotion to the Obos league. Vard, for their part, has ended up dangerously close to the relegation battle with Træff and Pors right below them on points, with a better goal difference. It must be said, however, that Vard cannot be considered a relegation team, they have kept a lot of teams in the game all the way to the end, where they stand with 10 draws this season. But that counts for little when the moment of truth comes, and each of the 5 remaining games for the season will be extremely important. It does so for Ulf as well, anything other than promotion will be a complete failure. The teams drew in Haugesund and the stage is once again set for a supposedly close battle. In addition, Sandnes Ulf invites you to this year's Kronekamp and it often goes down well, especially when the weather forecast is good, when there is a little extra excitement in the stands that is much needed.
Sandnes Ulf – Everything is in place for a direct return to Obos – is that all that matters?
Sandnes Ulf has largely delivered as expected this season, although there have been a few missteps with losses against Pors (2–4) and Træff (2–3). It may still prove to be the kind of reminder that sharpens the team towards the end. Before the season, the club managed to retain several seasoned players with experience from both Obos and the Eliteserien, which has been crucial. At the same time, the loss of Braut to Tromsø has been more than well compensated for – Sundgot has been scoring goals in a row and now stands with an impressive 21 goals in 21 matches. He is the clear top scorer, a full 7 goals ahead of Sotra's Groos Kilen, and will naturally be a key player in a match like this.
Ulf is coming off a narrow 1–2 loss to Lillestrøm, but it was a match that gives confidence rather than doubt. Lillestrøm is undefeated in 32 matches, and the performance against them is a testament to their strength. Against Vard they face a desperate team that will fight for every ball, and that makes this anything but a formality. Even with a good lead over Sotra, it is in such matches that the points must be picked up.
The team line-up is expected to be the usual 4-4-2 formation. Tromsdal and Saugestad control the midfield, while Aune and Sundgot continue their effective collaboration at the top. Falch guards the goal, and in defense there is little doubt that the Faroese Øregaard will start after a brilliant season. All in all, Ulf is fielding a strong team, but they also know that Vard held them to 2–2 in June.
Vard Haugesund – A game of two halves
If you look only at halftime results, Vard would actually lead the department. The problem is the second half, and thus the team is fighting once again to stay in PostNord. It shouldn't be necessary, given how evenly they play against most, but the bottom line is that history repeats itself – as it did both last year and the year before.
The situation is extra demanding this year. The remaining schedule consists almost exclusively of tough away matches, including against Sotra and Jerv. That is why the victory in the final minutes against Eik-Tønsberg was absolutely crucial. With four points in the last two matches, coach Kolbjørn "Kolla" Fosen has had some peace of mind at work, and he can also be happy that Sander Lille-Lovo and Sivert Helgesen are back after quarantine.
The formation change to 5-3-2 has strengthened the team defensively, and it resulted in a zero goal difference against Arendal. Everything indicates that Vard will continue in the same vein against Ulf. Apeland will then be brought in as a striker together with Torben Dvergsdal, while Tobias Bjørnebye will control the midfield with his great running and aggressive play. And yes – he is the son of Stig Inge Bjørnebye.
An additional factor is that the club has now landed the coaching cabal for next season. Maid Memic and Espen Elvemo will take over from Fosen, and that clarification could give the player group peace of mind in the run-up to the season.
Conclusion – This may be more even than the table suggests
As we know, the odds selection in lower divisions is often thin. You often have to look closely at goal bets, selection and maybe some handicaps, especially when you are a little early with analysis to catch potential value bets. Let's see what we are offered, in no particular order:
- Both teams to score (1.67): This one is a bit of both. Sure, we have 2-2 from June and know that Ulf can fall behind while Vard knows where the goal is. But recent form still casts a little more doubt around the game. Ulf has kept a clean sheet in the last 3 of 5, and kept a good structure against Lillestrøm. The draw must almost be considered one of the banana peels of the season and will be difficult to include in the big picture. When Vard also has 4 goals in the last 5, there will be little support to draw from recent form anyway. What turns it around is the fact that Vard has a lot at stake and is coming off a wonderful victory against Eik-Tønsberg. If Ulf takes the lead, they can make it frustrating for Vard, but it is difficult to see Ulf falling behind 1-0 at home. The feeling is more of an open match, where we will soon see both teams score, despite recent form in both camps. And it almost solely depends on the fact that both teams must have 3 points and must advance.
- Over 0.5 goals to Vard (1.58): And with that, it is obvious to look at what odds we get on each team's ability to score. We have to go all the way up to 2.5 goals to Ulf with odds of 1.58, it seems too risky even though we know there are goals in Ulf on good days. As for Vard, they only need the one goal for exactly the same odds value. Yes, poor goal form, but it is certainly not impossible that they will find their way to the net at Østerhus Arena.
- Under 1.5 goals in the 1st half (1.93): This is based primarily on how even it was between these teams in Haugesund, where it was 0-0 at halftime, but in the end it ended 2-2 with two late goals from both teams in a dramatic match. If we look at Ulf's last 5 league matches, 1 of these has ended with under 1.5 goals in the 1st half, contradictory, but it has been against 4 of the teams in the bottom battle. Vard is also there, but it can be said that they are of a better caliber than the teams around them down there. Because in Vard's last 5 matches, all of them have ended under 1.5 goals in the 1st half. And this has been against opponents above them in the table that they are fighting intensely to keep up with. In other words, it is very even from Vard's 11th place to Lysekloster's 6th place. This game is tempting and it is based mostly on the starting point of the match, Vard's form curve and their previous match.
- Sandnes Ulf -1 (1.97): If Vard comes down to play a pure defensive game peppered with counterattacks, it can quickly become frustrating for Ulf. Then it will be a constant battle to find space and get through. We know that Vard comes here with a defensive formation that suggests that they can quickly say they are satisfied with 1 point. But we also know that Ulf is brilliant up front, they have shown that recently, and they have the creativity to untie the knot Vard (if necessary) chooses to tie. A handicap in that sense is tempting, because if Ulf gets the first goal early (that is, within the first 20 minutes), then Vard has to go forward. It can create room for more, room to kill the game. Ulf has that in him on good days, we have seen that.
- Under 3.5 goals (1.72): It feels like the starting point here is somewhat different than the 2-2 match in June. First and foremost the coaching change in Vard, and hence tactical changes, but also what is at stake. You don't need 4 goals from Ulf here, 2 goals and keeping a clean sheet would be a nice bonus. The point is that it will quickly become a defensive match from Vard where Ulf will hit and hit, until they find their way. It would be surprising if we see over 3.5 goals again in this match.
