The NHL season is underway, and we have betting opportunities pretty much every single day. A great league to follow for those who like action. Both in terms of the sport itself, but also in the betting world.

Because like many other American sports, there is a lot to bet on in these games. When the San Jose Sharks take on the Carolina Hurricanes, it is expected that it will be a bottom team taking on a top team.

What sets hockey apart from other sports here is that even if it's top-to-bottom, you can pretty much find something playable no matter what. The reason for this is the inherent uncertainty that anyone can beat anyone in this league. Let's take a look at what we expect from these teams.

San Jose Sharks – bottom team the last two seasons

In the NHL, teams tend to follow the same cycle over several seasons. It takes a long time to rebuild. It also depends a bit on what the ownership thinks. We must not forget that this is American business at its best and worst.

But there are positive signs that this team can compete for a playoff spot again in a season or two. Because they have one of the most exciting teams in terms of the future. The Sharks have had a proven strategy of building from scratch with a young team. Several teams have succeeded with the same strategy in the past. But it usually takes many years to achieve it.

The Sharks have been by far the weakest team of all the teams the last two seasons, and have been a bottom team for several seasons before that as well. We see that they are on their way. But we think it is a season or two too early yet. But there is no doubt that this team is exciting. They will probably surprise positively in several games this season. So with a little more experience, this team will take big steps. But the odds that the Sharks will win their division in the Pacific Division (151.00) tell the whole story. They are tipped to be clearly at the bottom of that division this year as well.

Hurricanes – a team for the top

The Carolina Hurricanes have had a good team for several years now. The team is especially exciting offensively. They had the chance last year to go all the way. But a somewhat clumsy transfer saga saw the team unravel a bit when they traded Necas to make room for Rantanen. It was unsuccessful, and in the end the team actually ended up getting rid of Rantanen as well. That left them without either of them.

But they have filled the team with quality before this season. So the team now looks more complete than it has in a long time. They have speed, they have physicality, and not least a coach who chases the team forward on the field. Last year, the team was the team that created the most of all, and also let in the least. This team really lives up to its Hurricane name when they play the way they want. They often bombard their opponent completely. The odds that the Hurricanes will win their division this year (2.20) say it all. The Metro Division should be theirs by a good margin this season.

All the new guys seem to have settled in well already. Hall, Miller and Stankoven have all scored in the first two games, and along with Jarvis, the offense is looking very good this year as well. They have scored 10 goals in two games, which will surely be quite common this year as well.

Conclusion – still class difference

There is no doubt that there is still a class gap between these two teams. We don't think talent can beat quality. So we are leaning towards a game for the away team here. The Sharks have two losses so far, while the Hurricanes have two wins. We think the Hurricanes will continue here.
