Analysis Information
Who stays afloat when the ship is leaking?
La Romareda is preparing for a night of high pressure and high expectations. Real Zaragoza are winless and have only two points from four games, while Albacete have one. Both have started weakly, both have leaked goals, and both need a boost before the season really takes off. For Zaragoza, this is a must-win match if the team is to keep their dream of promotion alive. For Albacete, it is an opportunity to fight back after a disastrous defensive start. Everything points to an intense and nervous match, where nerves can play as big a role as the football itself.
Real Zaragoza: Says water in the boat
Zaragoza have dreamed of returning to La Liga for many years, but every autumn the start of the season has had a common characteristic: a lack of efficiency, a lack of stability and a crowd that is gradually losing patience. This time it is Gabi Fernández who will try to change course. His team has two losses and two draws, most recently a 1-1 home match against Valladolid in which Dani Gómez rescued a point with his second goal of the season. He has been the team's most dangerous player up front, but three goals in four games is too little for a team with offensive ambitions.
The style of play bears the mark of a coach who is still searching for balance. Zaragoza have tried a 4-4-2 in recent matches, but the defense has failed at key moments. Six goals conceded in four matches is not a disaster, but it comes at a time that ruins matches. The defensive line has been unstable, partly due to injuries, but now the squad is starting to look stronger. Radovanović is back in central defense after the head injury that sent him out of the previous match, and the veteran provides experience and leadership at the back. Tachi and Tasende are back in training, but it is uncertain whether they will start.
In midfield, the Pedri type Raúl Guti is the one who will tie the game together and ensure that the chances are created. Offensively, Gabi has more strings to play on than before. Dani Gómez holds his place, but the competition is fierce: Kenan Kodro is ready to contribute, and Sinan Bakış is still part of the squad after he finally stayed. They have five different striker options, which can provide more flexibility in a game where the goals must come.
The most interesting question ahead of this match is who will start in goal. Argentine Esteban Andrada was brought in as a reinforcement in the summer, and there are many indications that he could make his debut here. With him in place, Zaragoza will have a goalkeeper with experience and authority, and that could be just what is needed to calm a restless back four. The crowd at La Romareda will demand a full effort and three points. They also know that the team has lost both of its last matches against Albacete, and will therefore expect a reaction. The pressure may be heavy to bear, but with a squad almost injury-free and a crowd behind them, Zaragoza has no excuse not to deliver.
Albacete: The White Submarine?
If there is unrest in Zaragoza, there is a complete crisis in Albacete. One point after four games is bad enough in itself, but it is the way the games have been lost that is most worrying. The team has conceded thirteen goals in four games, an average of over three per game, and no one else in the league has such weak defensive statistics. The open 4–4 game against Almería in the premiere was a warning: offensively they can create, but at the back it falls apart. After that there have been losses against Racing Santander, Cádiz and most recently Mirandés, where they lost 1–4 at home.
Coach Alberto González is under pressure and knows that something has to be done. He has been clear that the team needs to tighten up at the back, and he is considering changes in both defense and goalkeeping. Diego Mariño has played all four games, but after thirteen games at the back, Raúl Lizoain may get the chance to shake up the team. The challenges in defense are great. Jon García is suspended, Vallejo and Pepe Sánchez have been out with injuries and are unlikely to be in top form, and recently midfielder Javi Villar had to step in as a stopper. At the back, veteran Fran Gámez and young Jonathan Gómez have done their best, but have not been able to stop the leak. The midfield, led by Riki Rodríguez, has quality, but even he cannot cover the gaps at the back alone.
As if that weren't enough, they are missing top scorer Higinio Marín, who is serving a suspension after a red card against Cádiz. This means the team is losing its most experienced finisher. In his absence, much of the responsibility falls on Antonio Puertas. The former Granada player started with a goal and an assist in the first round, but has since had less to celebrate. He will have to deliver in the role of a hanging striker or false nine. On the wings, Jon Morcillo has shown a dangerous shot and a will to score, while Agus Medina has contributed with runs from deep and a goal in the loss to Racing. Offensively, the team has created eight goals in four games, and that's not bad. In fact, it's a number that could have given points in most games. The problem is that they are giving away twice as many at the back.
González has said they must play to the pressure Zaragoza is feeling. He knows the home team has to come forward and that the crowd can quickly become restless. His plan is likely to be to stay compact, focus on quick counterattacks and let Zaragoza take risks. Still, it is hard to imagine Albacete managing to keep a clean sheet. They have not managed to do so in any match so far, and all their matches have had both goals and drama.
Conclusion: When everything leaks, it becomes a goal
This match could really go either way. Zaragoza are the favorites, but the history against Albacete and their own form mean that there is a lot of uncertainty. Albacete have been terribly behind, but they score in every match. Zaragoza, on the other hand, have not kept a clean sheet for a long time either. The combination points to a match with chances both ways. The home team may have more quality in the squad and will be driven forward by the need for three points, while Albacete has strengths in attack and enough pace to exploit the transitions that come. The pressure, desperation and defensive weaknesses mean that both teams will get goals.
