Analysis Information
Can the home team turn the final around or will Los Rojillos be the ones to go up?
Saturday night at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere: Real Oviedo – Mirandés, playoff final for a place in La Liga. The first leg ended 1–0 to Mirandés after Alberto Reina scored, and Oviedo must win to advance. This is a club that has been waiting for this moment for 24 years. With 30,000 home fans behind them and pressure on their shoulders, this could be a match that takes on a life of its own. And one thing is certain: nothing is decided yet.
Real Oviedo
The form is strong. After a somewhat variable spring, Oviedo now has seven straight home games without a loss, and the team has not lost in the last twelve in all competitions (8–4–0), if you ignore the previous meeting against Mirandés of course. Coach Veljko Paunović has made the team appear compact and sure of the ball, and there is little doubt that he will demand high intensity from the start. The form of key player Santi Cazorla is good. And for those who want to know the full background to Cazorla's magical return to his childhood club, it is recommended to click on the adventure we have written about this very thing, the adventure can be found here.
Striker Zurawski is the top scorer with 14 goals, and also important in the build-up. The likely formation is 4-2-3-1. Lemos is still out, while Cazorla is expected to start despite minor knee problems. Oviedo will probably try to take control from the start, but must also watch out for Mirandés' dangerous counterattacks. At home, they have scored an average of 1.31 goals per game, and over 1.5 goals have been scored in 72% of the games. At the same time, there have been under 2.5 goals in four of the last six home games.
Mentally, there is a heavy burden on the players' shoulders: promotion means not only sporting prestige, but also significant financial income. According to the Spanish press, a promotion place will give Oviedo over 40 million euros in additional income next season. It creates both pressure and expectation – and no one in Asturias has slept very well in recent nights.
Mirandes
Mirandés is the most in-form team in the playoff. They have won both matches against Oviedo this spring (1–0 home and away), and know that a draw will do tonight. Coach Lisci uses a flexible 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation, and the team is extremely sharp in transition. Goalkeeper Raúl Fernández won the match last time with a penalty save, while midfield star Alberto Reina controlled the game and scored a goal.
Away from home, Mirandés have been solid: only two losses in their last six away games. They have scored an average of 1.4 goals away, and kept a clean sheet in three of their last five. The entire squad is injury-free. The mentality is strong, and they travel to Oviedo with the certainty that a draw will do. But this is not a team that will park the bus – they will try to decide on the counterattack. The red-clad Los Rojillos from Miranda de Ebro have gained a real “cup team” reputation in Spain in recent years, after strong cup results and now a surprisingly strong play-off. Now they are chasing the club’s first promotion to La Liga in history – and they are doing it without fear.
Mutual settlement
The last six meetings between these teams have given Mirandés four wins, while Oviedo has won once. Four of these matches have gone under 2.5 goals, and it has been extremely even in terms of games and chances. This season Mirandés has really had the upper hand: 1–0 wins both home and away in the league, and now also in the first final match. Historically, the away team's counter-attacking has also troubled Oviedo's backline, which has occasionally had problems handling the speed on the wings.
Can goals be broken when everything is at stake?
It is not an obvious goal celebration: six of the last eight mutual matches have gone under 2.5 goals. At the same time, this is a match where Oviedo must come forward, and Mirandés are good at punishing such openings. With the quality offensively of both teams, both teams scoring looks like an interesting option. This could also be a match that opens up in the 2nd half. The bookmakers set the line low, they think there will not be many goals, we completely disagree.
Everything points to one thing. We have a match where Oviedo must advance, while Mirandés are dangerous in transition. With Cazorla as the conductor in a match that could be historic, and Los Rojillos from Miranda de Ebro with confidence after winning the first match, this should be a match with chances both ways. We therefore play;
Segunda Division play-off final at 21:00: Real Oviedo - Mirandés: Over 2.5 goals (2.77)
