The UEFA Super Cup has been held more or less every year since 1973. Ajax were crowned champions after a double encounter against AC Milan. This is a match between the winner of the most prestigious European Cup and the second most prestigious. Since 1998, this has been decided in a single match.

It will be the same this year. PSG, who were absolutely superb in the Champions League last year, will meet Tottenham, who surprisingly went all the way in the Europa League. We have a clear idea that there is a class difference between the teams, and we will go through why we think so.

Paris Saint-Germain – Finally succeeded.

When Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) bought PSG back in 2011, the ownership stated that they intended to make PSG the best team in Europe. They almost coined the terms sports laundering and financial doping in the same breath. Rarely had the football world seen owners and clubs willing to spend so much money to achieve their goals. It has been a consolation for many that even if they could buy exactly what they wanted, they have not succeeded more than they have.

For players like Beckham, Zlatan, Messi, Mbappe, Neymar, Di Maria and Cavani are just examples of what this club has been able to buy. What has nevertheless proven is that getting all these stars to fit together has been a challenge. The team we saw last year has been a little different. Here the team also has stars, but players who are willing to work hard for each other. Rarely have we seen a team deserve to win as much as last year.

They were clearly the best team in Europe. In particular, they got the better of teams from England. They knocked out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal in turn. They have normally struggled against teams from the British Isles. But the team was simply too good. Since winning the final 5-0 over Inter, the team has participated in the Club World Cup. A tournament Chelsea eventually won after beating PSG 3-0 in the final. But they delivered many solid matches before the final. 4-0 against Atletico Madrid, 0-2 against Seattle, 4-0 against Inter Miami, and 2-0 against Bayern, as well as a very convincing 4-0 against Real Madrid.

It shows that the team still loves to score goals, while being tight at the back. The squad is still full of offensive players, and they are largely fielding the same team as last year, and they will probably hope to repeat their success. We believe they can do it. It starts with this match.

Tottenham – A title gave the kick.

Since Tottenham won the League Cup back in the 2007/2008 season, the trophy cabinet has remained untouched. So when they finally landed the Europa League title last year, many thought that would be enough to keep Postecoglou in the job for another season.

But not that time. He has been fired, and a more pragmatic coach has come in Thomas Frank. A Danish coach who has led Brentford since 2018. He took Brentford up to the Premier League in 2021, and has ensured that they have established themselves well in the league. It will therefore be exciting to see what the more calculated Dane can achieve. Tottenham, which Under Postecoglou was known for all men in attack, will probably have to adjust to a more controlling style of play now.

It will certainly take time, but will probably seem very sensible to most people. Because it could go a little overboard with the previous manager. Although it could be fun for the neutral spectator to watch, many Tottenham supporters probably had their hearts in their throats on several occasions. At the same time, it is also the end for one of the legends at the club. Son has played his last game, and will be a loss for this Tottenham team. But what is perhaps worse is that Maddison is out with injury for a long time, it seems. Because when Maddison is on the field, the team is often much better.

Although they have offensive players like Richarlison, Tel, Solanke and Kulusevski to name a few, it is when Maddison is on the pitch that they are at their best. The team has done well through the training matches. A win against Arsenal 0-1 and a draw against Newcastle 1-1 show that the team is at a good level. But the last training match against a team of PSG's caliber was last against Bayern. A match they were completely outplayed, and deservedly lost 4-0.

It is likely that a similar picture will emerge in this match as well. Bayern, who had much greater playing strength, dominated the entire match.

Conclusion – PSG will win if they want to.

The way PSG looks now, they can beat anyone they want. It's a matter of how much they put into it. This is the first proper match of the season, and we think they will come out of the starting blocks the same way they finished last year. The team looks very similar to last year, and they are well-coordinated.

While Tottenham under a new manager will still need some time. They also got a bad blow last time, which is not reassuring until they face similar opposition in this one. They will probably try to close down the back of the field.

But it will take something to stand against this PSG team. We think PSG is in a better place, playing the following games:
