"The whistle blows more often than VAR – here cards are handed out like Christmas cards in December!"

The Champions League dream is alive

With the Premier League offering five Champions League places this season, both Newcastle and Chelsea have everything to play for. Both teams are on 63 points, separated only by goal difference.

The winner  takes a big step towards the Champions League – bet

The loser  ends up in a precarious position and could, in the worst case, end up outside Europe.

This makes the match a classic six-point match, where the intensity is naturally turned up several notches.

Shape curves and momentum

Newcastle are strong at home and have won their last five at St.James'Park

Chelsea are in their best form this season after several convincing wins, including a 3-1 win over Liverpool

This sets the stage for a very tight and emotional affair, where small margins will be crucial – and where frustration and pressure can quickly lead to failure.

NEWCASTLE

Newcastle United have enjoyed a remarkable 2024/25 season under Eddie Howe, characterised by tactical adjustments, individual performances and the much-anticipated triumph of a trophy. They won their first major trophy since 1969 by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on 16 March 2025. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander "The Great" Isak secured the victory, making manager Eddie Howe the first English manager to win a major English trophy since 2008.

After a strong league performance with only three games remaining, they are in fourth place in the Premier League, level with Chelsea on 63 points and with both Nottingham (61st point) and Aston Villa (60th point) chasing behind, so it is clear that the battle for next season's CL play will live on until the final whistle this season.
Alexander Isak's goal form this season has been absolutely outstanding, of his 27 total goals this year, 23 of them have come in the league, so it is quickly clear that the Swede's contribution in front of goal has lifted the white and blacks up the table.

Another key factor in the team's success has been the redeployment of Sandro Tonali to a deeper midfield role. This change has given the team better balance and control, especially in conjunction with Bruno Guimarâes and Joelinton. Since the reshuffle, the home team have won 20 of 26 games, reflecting Eddie Howe's ability to adapt tactics effectively.

With three crucial games remaining, first a key home match against Chelsea, followed by an away match against Arsenal before finishing at home to Everton, the home team have a great opportunity to decide things for themselves in the Champions League next season. Regardless of the outcome, the season has been a success, with trophies and improved league performance as highlights.

CHELSEA

Chelsea FC have had a season marked by tactical adjustments, youthful energy and a battle to secure European play under Enzo Maresca. Maresca has implemented a "box midfield structure" using Moise Caicedo as an inverted right-back, freeing up Enzo Fernàndez and Cole Palmer to play more attacking roles. The return of Romeo Lavia has also bolstered the midfield with defensive stability and precise passing.

As of May 9, the Blues from London are in 5th place in the league with 63 points, the same as the home team here but with a worse goal difference. Recent matches include an impressive 3-1 win against Liverpool, where Cole Palmer broke an 18-game goal drought when he scored the penalty in extra time.
They have also reached the final of the UEFA Conference League after defeating our Swedish neighbours Djurgården 5-1 on aggregate. The semi-final also saw 16-year-old Reggie Walsh make his debut as the youngest Englishman to start a European match for the club since 1967. Something that shows that things are growing well in the younger ranks of the London team.

Despite the progress, the team has shown weaknesses in attack and at left-back. Nicolas Jackson has been inconsistent as a striker, and the man with the legendary hair Marc Cucurella has shown limited offensive contributions, so I wouldn't be too surprised if both a new striker and a new full-back emerge during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea face crucial matches against the aforementioned Newcastle, before Manchester United wait at home at Stamford Bridge and it all gets decided away against Nottingham Forest on May 25, and then it might be good to know whether they will play the Champions League next season before that match, because just 3 days later there is the final against Real Betis in the Conference League, and then it might be good if they can rest some players in the last round.

Summary

Newcastle v Chelsea is a key match in the race for Champions League football next season. Both teams will be giving it their all, and there is every reason to expect high temperatures, hard tackles and situations where the referee will have to intervene. This means that betting on total cards will be the most value-based bets in the match.

The matches between these two teams have in previous seasons been characterized by physical play and high temperatures, and in a similar match last year, 6 yellow cards were handed out. Here we can expect a high tempo, close duels and low risk tolerance from both teams. Add also a lot of stoppages in the game and players who will discuss with the referee and then we are left with a match where emotions and unnecessary chances in crucial moments can quickly result in both tactical and frustration cards.

Hard Facts

Newcastle have so far had 60 yellow cards and 1 red card, and the visitors have a whopping 96 yellow cards (an average of over 2.5 per match), a total of almost 160 cards, which provides a strong statistical basis for bets on either over 4.5 or 5.5 cards in this match.

In addition, referee John Brooks will be refereeing this match, he has 15 matches so far in the Premier League and has handed out a total of 79 yellow cards in these matches, which gives an average of 5.27 cards per match and that makes me even more confident in my choice of bet here.

Game suggestions:

England at 13:00: Newcastle – Chelsea: Over 4.5 cards in the match (1.65)

Alternative games:

Over 5.5 cards in the match (2.27)

Chelsea most cards (1.79)

Good luck
