Will Newcastle's 12th man be enough against Barcelona's stars?

A packed St. James' Park will once again sing the Champions League, and Newcastle will be visited by Barcelona themselves in what could be an unforgettable opening to the group stage. For the first time in two years, Newcastle are back on the biggest European stage, and the home fans are hoping for another magical evening like the one they experienced when they beat PSG in similar circumstances. This time it is Barcelona who are in the other half, and the Catalans arrive in England as reigning Spanish champions under Hansi Flick. With ambitions to go all the way to the top of the tournament, but with several key players out, this match will be a test for both teams. For Newcastle, it is about showing that they can pull off a tough group, for Barcelona, about making a mark from the start.

Newcastle United: The crowd as the twelfth man

Newcastle finally got their first league win of the season at the weekend when they beat Wolverhampton 1-0, and optimism has risen after a somewhat sluggish start. The team has kept a clean sheet in three of four league games, but things have been more uncertain going forward. German newcomer Nick Woltemade scored on his debut, and it gives hope that a new goalscorer can take responsibility after the sale of Alexander Isak and the departure of Callum Wilson. At the same time, it is still a young attack that needs to get used to this level, and much depends on the wings delivering.

In midfield, Newcastle have a solid core. Bruno Guimarães controls the rhythm, Joelinton provides power and duel strength, and Sandro Tonali adds creativity and passing quality. Tonali came close to scoring at the weekend, and he will be an important piece for those in Europe. Defensively, Schär and Burn have established a stable stopping pair, while Kieran Trippier provides experience and set-pieces from the right. The big plus for Eddie Howe is that the team appears solid at the back, but at the same time they need to develop a sharper attacking plan to threaten a team like Barcelona.

The squad news gives mixed feelings. New signing Yoane Wissa is out until October with a knee injury, Jacob Ramsey is out with an ankle injury, but otherwise the squad is intact. This gives Howe the opportunity to play strong, and with Gordon back, the team is more balanced offensively. Newcastle will focus on high intensity, physical dueling power and the crowd behind them to create pressure from the start. They have everything to win and little to lose, which makes them a dangerous opponent in such matches.

Barcelona: High expectations, fragile margins

Barcelona have opened La Liga with ten points from four games and showed muscle when they crushed Valencia 6-0 at the weekend. Hansi Flick has made his mark on the team by combining traditional possession with more direct play in attack. Offensively, the Catalans appear to be very effective. Robert Lewandowski remains one of Europe's most reliable strikers and showed it recently with two quick goals after starting on the bench. Raphinha has found form and scored two goals, while Marcus Rashford has already contributed with goal points after his loan from Manchester United. In addition, Fermín López scored twice and gives Flick an extra piece to use.

The injury situation is a question mark, however. Lamine Yamal is struggling with groin problems and is doubtful for the match. Gavi is out with a knee injury, and Frenkie de Jong is still uncertain after a muscle injury. This means that Pedri will have a big responsibility to control the game, while Marc Casado could get the chance to anchor in midfield. The midfield is thus a little weakened, and it could be an area Newcastle try to exploit.

At the back, the absence of Marc-André ter Stegen is first and foremost noticeable. Some believe it is a noticeable positive, others miss the captain, but what everyone can agree on is that Joan Garcia fills the goalkeeper position perfectly. He has shown promising tactics, but lacks experience at this level. At left-back, Balde is out, here we see Gerard Martin instead. Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen provide stability in the middle, while Koundé takes right-back. Overall, Barcelona still has a high-quality defensive line, but there are weaknesses that Newcastle can try to put under pressure, especially with a high recovery game.

Still, Barcelona are a team with experience, breadth and a will to win. Flick has made the squad work well together, and even without all the key players they are capable of winning such games. With Lewandowski in scoring form, Rashford as a speed threat and Raphinha with a goal-scoring flair, they have enough weapons to cause Newcastle big problems.

Conclusion: Experience wins the battle

This matchup could tip the scales, but when you put all the factors together, the arrows point mostly towards Barcelona. Newcastle have strength in organization, high intensity and home field advantage, but they still lack sharpness up front and have scored too few goals. Barcelona, for their part, have a breadth and an offensive register that is difficult to match, although the absences in midfield and in goal create some question marks. The Catalans have started the season strongly, they have several players in scoring form, and even on a difficult away field they have enough quality to control and decide the match. There are two different approaches that meet in this match. Newcastle will focus on high tempo, physical play and crowd support. Barcelona will seek to control the ball, but may be exposed to intensity that they do not encounter every week in La Liga. The absences in Barcelona's midfield and in goal make them more vulnerable than normal, while Newcastle still has not completely found the rhythm in attack. The sum of this points to a match with chances both ways.
