Before the season, this matchup between Molde and Sandefjord in the 2025 Eliteserien would have sounded completely normal – but not with Sandefjord in fifth place and Molde in eleventh. Not many people imagined that. This year's season has been tough for Molde, and the goal now must be to climb to the upper half of the table. It is extremely even in the middle tier – from fifth to twelfth place there are only four points – so the possibilities of catching up with the teams ahead are certainly present.

Molde analysis: Can they start the rescue operation against Sandefjord?

The 2025 season has so far been a big disappointment for Molde. The team that was supposed to fight for medals is now fighting to reach the top half. Per-Mathias Høgmo stuck to his playing style for a long time, but the results did not come – and finally he had to pack his bags in September. Magne Hoseth took over the responsibility, and has led the team in four matches. Only one of these has been at Aker Stadion, the rest away from home. The results: one win at home, two losses in the Eliteserien and one cup promotion after a penalty shootout away from home.

At home, Molde has been inconsistent this season, with a record of 6–1–5 and a goal difference of 20–14. Looking at the last five home games, however, the numbers show improvement: 4–0–1 and a goal difference of 10–3, with three games where they have kept a clean sheet. A win tonight would reduce the gap to fifth-place Sandefjord to just one point – even though Molde would then have one more game to play.

Molde have an average of 1.67 goals scored per home game, and conceded 1.17. They have kept three clean sheets at Aker Stadion this season. There is no doubt that they have found more stability after Eikrem was once again given his classic role at the heart of the team.

Sandefjord analysis: Weak away, strong at home - will the trend continue?

Sandefjord had nine straight home wins earlier in the season, before facing the teams in first, second and third place. There they were put in place with three consecutive losses, and now stand at 9–0–3 and an impressive goal difference of 28–12 on their own turf.

Away from home, however, it's a completely different story. The team from the whaling town has a 2–1–8 record and a goal difference of 13–23. The first win came against Tromsø in round five, and the last against Haugesund in round 23 – a game where they must be said to have been a bit lucky.

After July, the trend has been heavy. Sandefjord started August with two losses, followed up with one draw away, before suffering four more losses in a row. The win against Haugesund and the three-pointer at home against Bryne before the international break did provide a small boost. The question is: have they managed to use the international break to turn the trend around, or will the weak away statistics continue to characterize the team?

Although Molde are on paper the second weakest in the form table, there is little doubt that the curve is pointing upwards. The home form is solid, and the team seems more structured under Hoseth. The odds reflect this: 1.90 for a home win and 3.90 for an away win.

Molde have won four of their last five home games, and with Eikrem back in his natural role, the game finally looks like it's flowing again. Everything indicates that they will build on the positive development.
