Bottom half, negative goal difference, and negative atmosphere. Manchester United have continued where they left off last year. Everything from Arsenal to Grimsby are proving too strong for Amorim's boys, and it is questionable how long the unwavering Portuguese will be allowed to continue in Manchester. It is commendable to stand firm in principle when there is a storm from all sides, but it is a little more serious if you refuse to adapt to the situation you find yourself in. The situation is complex, and if the last 10 years have taught the club management anything, it must be that the solution is not necessarily just to send the manager out the door. Still, the table rarely lies, and what was delivered last year was an absolute rock bottom. Amorim is living on borrowed time, and so far this season the matches against Arsenal and Manchester City have been lost. Now the third top match appears, and if this one is lost too, then perhaps they simply have to have a scapegoat. Chelsea, for their part, have something a little more interesting going on. The league season has started promisingly, with a solid goal difference, and eight out of twelve points in their pocket. Bayern proved to be a bit too strong in midweek, but this match may suit the Royal Blues better. We consider Chelsea's midfield to be significantly better than United's, and in these matches this part of the team often becomes the deciding factor. A lot is at stake in Manchester this Saturday night.

Manchester United – Buy high, sell low

That has been the club's transfer philosophy in recent years. You find a few players who might fit the profile, pay the whites of your eyes, offer a lucrative contract, and wait for the player to fail. Then you sell at a massive loss. And then you repeat the whole thing when a new manager comes smiling through the gates with an adventurous contract of his own. That's how it goes, without any visible common thread. This common thread is precisely what is so important within a club. Because what is the team's profile? The identity should remain the same regardless of who is leading the troops. You should hunt for specific types of players, and you need to find Manchester United players in the market, not Amorim players or Ten Hag players. This is where the club has failed for years. And as if this were not alarming enough, several of United's players shine again when they are allowed to leave the club. The warning lights should go off.

The match will be played on Saturday evening in Manchester, and the conditions should therefore be optimal. The Reds will avenge the 0-3 loss to City in the previous round, and will therefore find themselves in a slightly advantageous situation for this team, namely that they will have to control the events of things themselves. Or do they dare to give up the initiative and go deeper into the field with a focus on transitions? The high defensive line was abused by the light blues with Haaland in the lead, so some adjustment may be needed.

Historically, it has been even between these two. They have played several draws in recent years, and the victories are almost equally distributed. United have to move forward this time, because after a tight start, only three points are at stake on Saturday. What could quickly become decisive is whether they can get Cunha back on his feet before the start of the match. The home team does not have many cards to play on moving forward, so getting the Brazilian on the field will be important. It will probably also help the working relationship between Sesko and Mbeumo. The Reds had a considerable xG against their city rivals last weekend, so there may be something to build on.

Chelsea – You start to see the outlines of a foundation wall

Because things have gradually looked better, and more solid, in London. The midfield is rock solid, and Plamer and Pedro at the top are class players. The wings have come and gone at the club, but at the moment there are several exciting alibis here too. The back row and goalkeeper are at a good level, so now it's really just the top performances that are missing. Chelsea are really on hold, and the football world is excited to see if they can once again take the step up to the best of the best.

Two draws against Crystal Palace and Brentford respectively, as well as wins against West Ham and Fulham have sent the team up to a provisional fifth place, with everything and everyone hanging in the balance. The goal difference of 9-3 is strong, but comes mainly from the Hammers' defeat. In the previous league match, away against Brentford, they led 2-1 when the teams entered extra time. They were unable to resist, and minutes later two points were lost. These losses of points must be avoided if the plan is to challenge for the league title. It may come a little too early for the Royal Blues, but the fact that the top four is a minimum goal seems obvious now.

Away against Manchester United, they will probably be looking for goals again after Caicedo and Enzo dominate the midfield. Chelsea are good at this, winning yards and areas centrally, and finding Palmer especially in the middle. Both Neto and Estêvão could potentially get good working conditions on Saturday, and if they can also set up Joao Pedro against a back-breaking United defense, an already good goal difference could be even better. Chelsea will hope to do like Arsenal and Manchester City, punish their old rivals on their own turf.

Conclusion – Two greats meeting in the elevator

Because while some are on the rise with Champions League games and a good position in their domestic league, others are well on their way down. It is difficult to turn these big ships that are starting to deviate in course, and the explanation is often complex and profound. On the surface, new players are bought, managers are changed, and some nice press conferences are held. On the inside, however, there is a happy frenzy, and no one seems to quite know where the shoe is pressing. If the pressure point is the ownership structure, administration, management, business model and key personnel, the club is seriously ill. Such an illness is not cured overnight, and buying Højlund, Zirkzee and Sesko is then like putting a pink Barbie Band-Aid on a gaping flesh wound. It takes years to sort out structural errors, and most of the signs point to Manchester United not being itself for several seasons. Maybe the lower half of the table is where they belong now?

In terms of matches, the home team just has to fight. You can always fight, and in individual matches that can also be enough. A fierce effort on the day can move mountains, and for the match on Saturday this is probably the key for the home team. Nothing will come for free, but if everyone runs their socks off, and if the new signings up front have their day, then this could be a real football match. Chelsea will probably try to control events as best they can, and once again try to find the way to the net. The match away against Bayern in midweek must be forgotten, and for their part one must hope that these 90 minutes are out of their legs when the referee blows the whistle.

A match that was initially even could turn this weekend. The home team doesn't seem to be able to close the gap, so we're leaning more towards a goal-scoring performance than a goalless one this time. Chelsea score an average of around two goals, while the Reds concede around the same. Given the teams' previous high-scoring matches, and the fact that United almost have to get up and move to assert themselves, it could be a good match for quick-footed Blues. A possible winner tonight is harder to predict, as these matches can live their own lives, but the indications point to goals, and perhaps especially for the away team. We end up here, with a BTS variant as the closest challenger.
