Lyon – Strong defensive play this season:

Lyon have started strongly and are at the top – tied for first place with PSG, separated on goal difference. At home at Groupama Stadium they are 3–0–0 and 5–0 on goal difference. After much financial turmoil between 2024/25 and this season, OL Groupe seems to have turned the tide on the men's team. They have been active in the transfer market, although they are still monitored by the DNCG (French football financial regulator).

Defensively, Lyon have been rock solid: four out of five league games with a clean sheet, and five out of six if we include last week's Europa League match. Their weaknesses are most often revealed against teams with pace and clear transition patterns - if they encounter structure and quick breaks, they can become vulnerable.

At home, Lyon have dominated the field play in the first three rounds of the season, producing an xG of 7.61, but "only" scoring five goals. This indicates some inefficiency, which normally evens out over time - especially against supposedly weaker opposition. In addition, Lyon have only lost three of their last 29 matches played in European competitions at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

RB Salzburg – Unstable results in Europe.

Red Bull Salzburg have a rich European history and have alternated between the Champions League and Europa League for nearly two decades, with varying results. Last year's Champions League participation was difficult, with only one win, seven losses and a 5–27 goal difference.

In the Austrian Bundesliga, they dominated from 2013/14 to 2022/23 with ten league titles in a row, before Sturm Graz broke the streak in 2023/24 and have held the throne since. After eight rounds this season, Salzburg are in fourth place with a 4–2–2 and 17–11 goal difference, while away they are 2–1–1 and 7–7 goal difference.

The style of play is offensive and intense with high tempo, quick transitions and attacking play through recovery. Away from home they often form more compactly to exploit space and counterattacks. Vulnerabilities come when the opponent holds a lot of the ball and presses high, and they can then lose control of the midfield battle, causing structure to sag and performance to dip.

What can we expect?

We expect Lyon to take the initiative and dominate much of the match, and that they will pressure Salzburg as early as possible. Salzburg will probably respond by staying compact and trying to counterattack, but could have problems if they lose midfield duels. The picture points to at least two goals, probably three – with an advantage for Lyon.
