Analysis of the teams

The end of the season is approaching, and while some are fighting for league gold and others to stay above the line, this weekend we have a Como team that has impressed tremendously – and a Cagliari team that still can’t breathe a sigh of relief. They should pick up a few more points before the season is over. With some important pieces out for both teams, this could be an even affair that could offer a lot of good football.

Como – top form and flow in Serie A

Cesc Fàbregas and Como can look back on a solid season as we approach the final stretch. There are many positives to take away, and as of today they are in perhaps a slightly surprising 10th place after promotion to Serie A this season. They have made it difficult for other teams to come to the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia and take points – something they have shown time and time again.

With a good tactical approach, thanks in large part to Fàbregas, reliable passing players and young, talented offensive players, Como has really impressed this season.

It was therefore a huge blow when Assane Diao broke his foot at the end of April. The talented Senegalese has been a wild card up front for Como, using his speed and dribbling skills to be a constant threat in and around the opposition penalty area. His absence will be felt in the last three games.

Another young player who has been nothing short of sensational for Como is Spaniard Nico Paz. Signed from Real Madrid Castilla before the season, the 20-year-old false nine has provided 6 goals and 6 assists. These are two players who have been absolutely crucial to Como's success.

Five wins in the last five games is an impressive streak to take into the end of the season – especially considering that four of those games have ended with a clean sheet. It’s all the more remarkable considering the team has conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game.

Cagliari – the latest move towards safety

The season has probably gone about as expected for Davide Nicola and his Cagliari team. With 33 points and a 14th place in the table, they are on track to repeat the performance from last season's Serie A.

The most positive thing about Cagliari's season has been their ability to win the regular games against teams in the lower half of the table – it is these points that are now reflected in their table position and which could secure them a place in the top division next season. But against teams higher up the table they have often fallen short.

The last five matches have yielded three losses, one draw and one win – the latter coming away to Hellas Verona at the end of April. After this weekend's match they will face relegation-threatened Venezia at home, before travelling to league leaders Napoli in the final match of the season. Cagliari thus have three chances to add to their statistics.

Two of the team's most important players this season are two loanees who operate at opposite ends of the pitch. Goalkeeper Elia Caprile has been very good – despite the results not always reflecting his performances – and has kept a clean sheet in 6 of 20 matches. In attack, Roberto Piccoli has delivered the goods. With 9 goals and 1 assist in Serie A, the Atalanta-owned striker has been an important piece in Cagliari's offensive game.

The Sardinian team has conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game, despite Capriles' efforts. With the great defender Yerry Mina out with a thigh injury, there is bad news ahead of a difficult away match against in-form Como.

Goal celebration in store?

This is a match between two teams that have conceded more goals than they would like. Como like to dictate the pace and are no stranger to pressing high and creating chances. Cagliari will have to play to their strengths – filling the penalty area, getting good crosses and trying to break the rhythm of the home team.

This could quickly become an even and tough match – with many chances for both teams.
