Analysis of the teams

Things are really starting to pick up in Italy, and it is goal difference that separates Inter from Napoli in the bottom spot. But this analysis is not going to be about Inter and Napoli's ongoing battle for the Scudetto – now we are going to dig deeper into this weekend's meeting between Inter and Roma. A match both teams enter with such a strong winning instinct that anything other than victory is unthinkable. Inter have shown their greatness this season, both in Serie A and in Europe. Roma, on the other hand, have a weak start to the season to thank for their current seventh place – despite some strong football this spring. Let's take a look at the teams.

Inter – the excitement continues in the fight for the gold

Inzaghi's men are on the verge of replicating last year's success. Going into this weekend's match, they are at the top of the table, leading on goal difference. So far, they have scored 72 goals – the most of any team in the league – and conceded 32. That gives Inter a goal difference of +40, which could quickly prove decisive when the final round of the league is played.

These are the numbers that tell the story of this Inter team under Simone Inzaghi: A team that is able to defend its own box for all it's worth, stay compact and deny the opponent the big chances. At the same time, they are skilled in the transition phase – fast, many people in the box, and good working conditions for the offensive players.

But football is unpredictable, and you don't always get what you want. The previous round of the league illustrated that well, when Inter suffered a bitter 1–0 loss away to Bologna, after conceding the winning goal deep into overtime.

When competing on multiple fronts – in the league where every game counts, in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, and in the Champions League next week – it is difficult to perform at 100% all the time. When the news also says that Denzel Dumfries (the powerhouse at right-back) and top scorer Marcus Thuram are out with injuries, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alessandro Bastoni are suspended, it is clear that this is not ideal for a club in the final stages of the season.

Rome – A pack of hungry wolves

Ranieri's men have been the very definition of rock solid in recent months. I wrote about Roma a few weeks ago, and then I wrote that they have not lost a match in Serie A since a 2-0 defeat away to Como on December 15th last year. That statistic still stands – impressive for a team that seemed helpless under Ivan Juric at the start of the season.

The last five matches have ended with three wins and two draws – against Juventus and arch-rivals Lazio in the Derby della Capitale. The negative for the capital club is that they have only scored five goals in the last five matches. It has occasionally been enough to win, but not against top clubs like Juventus and Lazio, both of whom are two points ahead of Roma. This means that Roma are in 7th place with a goal difference of +16. Not on par with Inter, but still solid.

There are many similarities between Roma and this weekend's opponents. Ranieri's men play in a dynamic 3-4-2-1 formation, where the wing-backs are one of the greatest strengths - especially Alexis Saelemaekers, who has been a revelation on the right flank. The advantage of this formation is the ability to defend with a compact five, while at the same time having many points forward in the pitch during transitions - both wide and in the space. Roma have mastered this balance impressively well.

The absence of Paulo Dybala is still felt. He has been a key player, both for goals and creativity, but also for creating rhythm and danger in the offensive game.

A close, even and exciting match

Inter must win this match to avoid giving up the small advantage they have in the race for the Scudetto. Their form has been a bit of a letdown, with an exit from the Coppa Italia against Milan and an awkward 1–0 loss against Bologna – this should be a wake-up call. Roma, on the other hand, have forgotten what it feels like to lose in Serie A, and are unlikely to give up without a real match. You should catch this highlight.
