Relegation crisis meets Champions League hopes

One of the weekend's treats takes place in the very north of Germany, specifically Kiel. Here, Holstein Kiel is fighting a desperate battle to avoid direct relegation, while Freiburg still has a Champions League spot in sight. The home team is second to last and could be relegated this weekend if they lose, and Heidenheim also wins their game. Freiburg, on the other hand, is in fourth place – but with both Dortmund and Leipzig breathing down their necks, they can't afford to make mistakes. Both of these teams have shown good pace lately and both teams will be fully fired up ahead of a season-defining clash – here you just have to buckle up!

Holstein Kiel: Must win – knowing weak defensive structure

Holstein Kiel are coming off an impressive 3-1 away win against Augsburg and also beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3 in their previous home game. Offensively, the team has found their form again – with seven goals in the last two games, as many as in the previous seven combined. But the victories have not come without danger signs: against Augsburg they allowed four big scoring chances against and xG 3.22 expected behind.

Coach Marcel Rapp will have to make big changes at the back. Four defenders – Kleine-Bekel, Komenda, Nekic and Erras – are unavailable, and in addition, midfield warrior Nicolai Remberg is suspended. This will probably force Rapp to experiment with a back line consisting of Becker, Johansson and Zec, while Knudsen and Gigovic will have to take responsibility centrally. Up top, both Kelati and Machino are uncertain, so Bernhardsson and Harres are expected to start. There are especially high hopes that Machino will be fit for the match – he has 11 goals, 4 of which have come in the last 3 matches.

Despite the problems, Holstein has positive aspects to lean on: the team has taken the lead in five of its last five, and its home form has improved somewhat – but the uncertainty behind means that any loss of points could be fatal. They are in 17th place, one point behind the qualification place and six behind safe ground, and have conceded by far the most goals this season. With 2 games left in the season, everything is at stake. Freiburg is a challenge, but next weekend an in-form Borussia Dortmund awaits on the road. Needless to say: Holstein Kiel knows that they should take points at home to the fullest extent.

Key statistics:

  • 7 goals in the last 2 games – as many as in the previous 7.

  • Has conceded goals in all of their last 8 matches.

  • Has taken the lead in the last 5 out of 5 matches, it has ended with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss

  • Lost 3 of their last 6 home games.

  • Major absences in defense + Remberg suspended.

SC Freiburg: The Champions League dream is alive – but the margins are small

Freiburg's season has been characterised by consistent performances and many close matches – and now they suddenly have a real opportunity to secure the club's first ever Champions League participation. With two matches left in the season, everything is in their own hands: They are in 4th place, one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund and two points ahead of RB Leipzig. However, they are playing with a negative goal difference, which could ultimately bring them down. The match programme is not easy either, first a physically tough battle against Holstein Kiel, followed by a top match at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Last weekend they led 2-0 for a long time against Leverkusen, and as so many other teams have made mistakes in the past, they were punished severely at the end with 2 goals in the 82nd and 90+3rd minutes. Coach Christian Streich has made Freiburg a solid team, but the team also creates little going forward – and has the fewest finishes of all the top 8 teams after the New Year. However, they are extremely effective at set pieces and have scored on 22% of their corners this season.

Freiburg boasts a relatively injury-free squad and therefore has a slight advantage on that front. The team relies on Grifo and Doan doing their job on the wing, both producing goals on the approach and have in that sense become the two players who drive Freiburg properly forward. Eggestein and Osterhage played a solid game in central midfield against Leverkusen, and we will most likely see the duo in action there again. Holer missed the game against Leverkusen but is expected to return for this game.

Freiburg have also had a good rhythm away from home since February: in six away games there have been 4 wins and 2 draws, which has improved the poor autumn statistics. In addition, the last 4 of 5 games have gone over 2.5 goals, with BTS in the same number.

Key statistics:

  • Solid away statistics after February: 4 wins and 2 draws

  • Last 4 of 5 matches with BTS + over 2.5 goals

  • Has scored on 22% of his corners – highest in the Bundesliga.

  • Rarely concedes before half-time – led or kept a clean sheet at half-time in 3 of last 5

The arrow points towards Freiburg, but here we could quickly have an open and goal-rich match

Holstein Kiel is more or less forced to win, or at least get 1 point. However, the team is struggling with heavy absences and a shaky defense. Freiburg has been far better defensively this season and doesn't exactly need motivation heading into this match. They have to rely on set pieces and the Grifo magic on a challenging away field. If we compare the teams' last 5 matches, Holstein Kiel is 2-2-1 and 10-8 in goal difference and Freiburg is 3-1-1 and 9-9 in goal difference. If we look at this in a slightly different way, the teams are relatively equal and it can be said that the teams should have just as good motivation to win. Holstein Kiel is struggling a bit more on the injury front, but how dramatically it will change the match picture is more uncertain. Recent form suggests goals for both teams, but also weak defensive performances. With that in mind, we can look at some alternative bets:

  • Both teams to score (1.48): This one almost speaks for itself. A full 9 of the last 10 matches, the teams combined, have ended with BTS. And the match last fall ended 3-2 to Freiburg.
  • Over 2.5 goals (1.54): This is based on statistics: 7 of the last 10 matches, the teams combined, have ended with over 2.5 goals.
  • Both teams to score + over 2.5 goals (1.75): The combination of the two above is too good to ignore. It is a good odds and it is highly likely that we will see such an outcome here.
  • Freiburg over 1.5 goals (1.76): That Freiburg can sneak past Holstein Kiel here is also a viable bet. They have scored 2 or more in the last 3 of 5 games, and put 3 past Holstein Kiel this fall. The only thing that makes this bet uncertain is that Holstein can hold on tight on a good day. They have shown that recently against RB Leizpig and Mainz 05, among others. In addition, Freiburg's tactical approach to the match can stand out here, in the form of securing a possible lead.
  • Holstein Kiel to score first (2.29): The high odds based solely on Holstein's last 5 matches. But this game should be expected before the lineup is out. It is safe to say that if Machino plays, you can bet a little on this game. If Machino doesn't play, Bernhardsson really must have a good day, but can't boast the same sparkling form that Machino has these days.

Combination bets offer good value here in what is expected to be an open match that can quickly swing back and forth. A lot is at stake for both teams, so the main bet will be:

Bundesliga at 15:30: Holstein Kiel – SC Freiburg: Both teams score and over 2.5 goals (1.75)
